BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Blue team scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come from behind for a 5-3 win over the Red team in the third and deciding game of Samford baseball's 2011 Red-Blue World Series Wednesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the Red team leading, 2-1, heading into the bottom of the eighth, Caleb Dugas scored the game-tying run from third base on a squeeze bunt by Brad Moss. Saxon Butler then singled to give the Blue team the lead for good at 3-2. Phillip Ervin then hit a two-run single to make the score 5-2.
The Red team came back with a run in the top of the ninth inning to cut the lead to 5-3. The score, however, would get no closer as the Blue team came away with the two-run victory.
The Red team jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning. Austin Allison doubled to lead off the inning. After moving to third base on a ground out, Allison scored on a single by Drew McWhorter to take an early 1-0 lead.
Red pushed its lead to 2-0 with a run in the top of the seventh inning. After a one-out triple by Tommy Corbin, Allison doubled to drive Corbin in to make the score 2-0.
The Blue team scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Red team's lead to 2-1.
Samford head coach Casey Dunn pitched for the Blue team and earned the win, while assistant coach Mick Fieldbinder pitched for the Red team and took the loss.
The Red-Blue World Series concluded fall practice for the Samford baseball team.
