The Samford University men's tennis team continued its dominating play at home this season as the Bulldogs registered a pair of 7-0 decisions against both UNC Asheville and Gadsden State on Sunday at the Samford Tennis Center.
With the doubleheader sweep, Samford (4-1) improved to 4-0 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs have not relinquished a point at the Samford Tennis Center in 2011 and have outscored their opponents by a total of 28-0.
In their first match of the day, the Bulldogs cruised to a 7-0 triumph against UNC Asheville (1-3). Samford won the doubles point and then received singles victories from Carson Kadi, Zac Dunkle, Carl Abalos, Oliver Reynolds, Fernando Costa and Alexander Sajonz.
The Bulldogs' doubles teams comprised of Reynolds and Abalos earned an 8-1 win on court No. 1, while Samford's pairing of Dunkle and Sajonz outlasted UNC Asheville's tandem of Nicola Nonnenbroich and Nathan White, 8-6, in the No. 2 doubles competition. With the Bulldogs' wins on the top two doubles courts, Samford took an early 1-0 lead in the contest.
Against UNC Asheville, the Bulldogs earned straight-set victories in singles play from Dunkle, Abalos, Reynolds, Costa and Sajonz.
In the No. 1 singles contest, Samford's Kadi outlasted UNC Asheville's Nonnenbroich in a three-set marathon 6-3, 5-7, 12-10.
The Bulldogs concluded Sunday's doubleheader with a 7-0 victory against Gadsden State (0-2). Samford swept the doubles point and then registered singles wins from Scott Foster, Garrison Laduca, Ryan Shidler, Michael Browder, Joe Hunsicker and Mark Lange.
All six of the Bulldogs' singles victories occurred in straight sets, except on court No. 6 where Samford's Lange won via walkover. Gadsden State's Daniel Little injured himself in doubles play and was not able to compete in the singles competition.
In doubles play, the Bulldogs' combination of Shidler and Hunsicker earned a victory on court No. 1, while Samford's pairing of Browder and Lange tallied an 8-4 win on court No. 2. In the No. 3 doubles match, the Bulldogs' tandem of Kelwin DeWet and Costa cruised to an 8-1 victory against Gadsden State's combination of Demetrious Thompson and Brandon Terrell.
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at noon against the Belmont Bruins. The contest will be the Bulldogs' fourth straight home match and will be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
