Women's Golf In First Place After Opening Day Of USA Lady Jaguar Invitational

MOBILE, Ala. - The Samford University women's golf team carded a two-round score of 608 Monday to move into sole possession of first place at the 2001 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational being held at the Azalea City Golf Club (par 72, 6,051 yards).

Samford opened the two-day tournament with a first-round score of 300 before closing out Monday's competition with a round-two mark of 308.

The Bulldogs hold a one stroke advantage over the homestanding South Alabama Lady Jaguars. South Alabama tallied a 36-hole score of 609, while Louisiana-Monroe sits in third place at 614.

Individually, Samford was paced by true freshman Natalie Mitchell's day-one total of 152. The Bulldogs' highly-touted native of Germantown, Tenn., opened Monday's competition with a first-round score of 73 before closing out the last 18 holes with a 79. Mitchell heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for seventh place in the tournament's individual standings.

Samford's Anna Heim and Kayla Turner also completed the second round in the top 10. Both players tallied identical 36-hole scores of 153 and are tied for the ninth-place position in the tournament.

Heim, the Bulldogs' sophomore from Lafayette, La., registered round-by-round scores of 75 and 78 on Monday, while Turner carded marks of 72 and 81, respectively. Turner, Samford's sophomore from Clarksville, Tenn., turned in the Bulldogs' best round of the day with her tournament-opening 72.

Samford's lone upperclassman, Sarah Butts, fired a second-round score of 73 to move into 13th place in the individual standings with a 36-hole score of 154. The Bulldogs' junior from Carrollton, Ga., opened the tournament with a first-round mark of 81. Samford's Savannah Schubert rounded out the Bulldogs' scoring with a 36-hole tally of 158 (80-78).

The Samford University women's golf team will conclude play in the 2011 USA Lady Jaguar Invitational Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs begin competition in the third-and-final round to be held at the Azalea City Golf Club.
