The Samford baseball team will play host to in-state rival Troy Tuesday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
The Bulldogs enter the week with a record of 5-4 after dropping four games at Jacksonville over the weekend. Samford fell in those games by scores of 6-1, 4-0, 8-7 and 11-4.
For the season, Samford is led at the plate by Phillip Ervin, batting .444 (8-for-18) with three doubles, a triple, a home run and four RBI. Michael Johnson is batting .438 (14-for-32) with six RBI. Saxon Butler has an average of .419 (13-for-31) with six doubles and 10 RBI.
Samford is scheduled to start junior Charles Basford on the mound against the Trojans. Basford has a record of 1-0 with one save and a 0.00 ERA so far this season.
The Trojans are currently 6-1 after winning two of three games from Southern Mississippi over the weekend. Troy won games one and three, 4-3 and 13-4, and dropped the second game, 4-1.
Troy is led at the plate by Blake Martz, batting .440 (11-for-25) with 10 RBI. Todd McRae is batting .400 (6-for-15) with seven RBI for the Trojans.
Troy has listed left-handed pitcher Jimmy Hodgskin as its starting pitcher for the game. Hodgskin has posted a 4.50 ERA with no record so far this season.
Samford and Troy will be meeting for the 50th time in baseball, with Troy holding a 34-15 advantage in the series. Last season, the teams split the regular-season series, with each team winning on the road. Samford won the first meeting in Troy, 9-7, but the Trojans came back to win the game at Joe Lee Griffin Field by a score of 11-9.
