ONEONTA, Ala. - Play in the 2011 Samford Intercollegiate women's golf tournament was halted early due to rain Monday as an incessant rainstorm rolled through the area as the teams were closing out the second round of the 54-hole event. Samford finished the first round of play as the third-place team in the two-day tournament being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club.

The Bulldogs carded an 18-hole score of 304 Monday to jump out to the third-place position. True freshman Alex Jasper paced Samford with a 2-under-par 70 (34-36) to move into third place in the individual standings.

Fellow freshman Natalie Mitchell posted a first-round score of 77 (38-39) for the Bulldogs, while sophomore Kayla Turner and junior Sarah Butts followed closely with 18-hole marks of 78 (39-39) and 79 (39-40), respectively.

Anna Heim, Samford's sophomore from Lafayette, La., rounded out the team's official scores Monday with an 18-hole mark of 82 (41-41). The Bulldogs' true freshman Savanna Schubert is competing as an individual this week and fired an 18-hole score of 76 (36-40). Schubert, Samford's native of Oak Ridge, Tenn., is tied for ninth place in the individual standings.

Troy carded a first-round team score of 300 to take a slim three-stroke lead following the opening 18 holes of the 2011 Samford Intercollegiate. Jacksonville State, the two-time reigning champions of the annual event, sits in second place with an early score of 303.

Individually, South Alabama's Nina Offenburg posted the best 18-hole score of the day with a sizzling 4-under-par 68 (34-34). Troy's Signy Arnorsdottir finished the first round of play in second place with a 69 (35-34), while Samford's Jasper held the third spot.

The 2011 Samford Intercollegiate will resume Tuesday at 9 a.m. (CDT) as the teams are scheduled to conclude play in the second round of action being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. The teams will then close out the two-day tournament with the third-and-final round of competition Tuesday.
