BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Samford baseball team will play host to in-state rival Jacksonville State in a non-conference game Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Bulldogs enter the week with a record of 16-10 overall and 6-3 in Southern Conference play. Samford dropped two of three games at Elon over the weekend. Samford won game two against the Phoenix, 11-0, but fell in games one and three by scores of 10-8 and 4-2.
Samford is led at the plate by Phillip Ervin, batting .439 (36-of-82) with seven doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI. Michael Johnson is batting .367 (36-of-98) with three doubles and 12 RBI. Saxon Butler is batting .337 (32-of-95) with four home runs and a team-high 26 RBI. Brandon Miller leads the team in home runs with six.
Samford is scheduled to start Joshua VanFleteren on the mound Tuesday night. VanFleteren has a record of 2-2 and an ERA of 3.92 entering this week.
The Gamecocks currently have a record of 17-7 overall and 2-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play. JSU won two of three games against UT-Martin over the weekend. JSU dropped the first game, 9-3, before coming back to win games two and three, 7-4 and 13-12.
Ben Waldrip leads the Gamecocks at the plate, batting .425 (31-of-73) with six home runs and 17 RBI. Erik Underwood is batting .392 (31-of-79). Sam Eberle leads JSU in RBI with 29. JSU has listed Taylor Sparks (0-1, 5.49 ERA) as its starting pitcher for Tuesday night.
Samford and Jacksonville State met earlier this season in Jacksonville, Ala. JSU defeated Samford, 5-2, in a rain-shortened, five-inning game.
Two special promotions are scheduled for Tuesday night's game. First, the athletics department, SGA and Greek Life are sponsoring a Crawfish Boil from 5-7 p.m. in the lower parking lot of the Pete Hanna Center.
Tuesday night is also philanthropy night for the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. ZTA will be raising money for Susan G. Komen For The Cure, to benefit breast cancer research. Samford will be wearing special blue hats with pink letters, and the bases will be painted pink. Breast Cancer Survivor, Carol Ann Grace will throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game.
ZTA will also be taking donations at the game. There will be pink cups at the concession stand, and there will be a silent auction where fans can bid on a pink ball autographed by the Samford baseball team. The first 100 fans who attend the game will receive a free pink shaker.
All breast cancer survivors are invited to attend the game for FREE and will receive a concession stand voucher for a complimentary meal.
