Volleyball Adds USF Transfer

July 14, 2011

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford volleyball program has added outside hitter Erika DeVaughn, a transfer from the University of South Florida, to its roster for the upcoming season, head coach Derek Schroeder announced on Thursday.

"L2 is going to be a very integral piece to attaining our team goals in 2011," Schroeder said. "Erika comes in this summer and is working out with the girls, playing some open gym and has been very excited to contribute in that capacity. A spot that could have been a weakness for Samford volleyball this year now may be a strength, with the addition of DeVaughn alongside Michaela Reesor, who is training with the Canadian National Team all summer."

DeVaughn earned time as a starter last season at South Florida. For the 2010 season, she totaled 78 kills, 12 digs and 16 blocks. She turned in an impressive performance in the team's 3-0, Big East win over Marquette, tallying 11 kills to just two errors.

DeVaughn, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., played her high school volleyball at Samuel W. Wolfson High School. She was a three-year starter in high school, serving as team captain as a senior.

In addition to her high school activities, DeVaughn also played club volleyball for the Jacksonville Juniors Volleyball Association. She was named to the 2008 USA Junior Nationals Florida Region All-State High School team.
