BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team practiced for about two hours in shells Thursday afternoon at Seibert Stadium. The practice was the fourth for the Bulldogs in fall camp.

The Bulldogs practiced in shorts and helmets on Monday and Tuesday and in shells on Wednesday and Thursday. The team's first full-pad practice will take place Friday afternoon.

Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said he was looking forward to seeing how the newcomers to the team perform on their first day in full pads.

"We want to see how they'll do in full pads, especially some of the young ones," Sullivan said. "I've been pleased with all of our freshmen so far, so we'll be anxious to watch them tomorrow and see how they'll do."

The Bulldogs practiced in 90-plus degree heat and high humidity on Thursday. Sullivan said, despite the high temperatures, he liked the way his team performed on Thursday.

"I thought they pushed themselves, and I thought their effort was good," Sullivan said. "There was some good and bad on both sides, but overall I thought it was a productive day for us."

Friday's full-pad practice is scheduled to begin at 4:10 p.m. at Seibert Stadium. Saturday will be the team's first two-a-day workout. The Bulldogs will begin the day by practicing at 8:50 a.m. in shells. The afternoon workout, which will consist of about an hour of regular practice followed by about a 30-play scrimmage, will begin at 3:50 p.m.

Samford is preparing for its 2011 season opener, which is scheduled for Sept. 3, at 6 p.m. at Seibert Stadium. The Bulldogs open the season against 2010 national semifinalist Georgia Southern.
