BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford football team practiced twice on Wednesday. The Bulldogs practiced in full pads in the morning, and then again in shells in the afternoon.

With Wednesday's workouts, the Bulldogs have now practiced 12 times this preseason. Samford head coach Pat Sullivan said the team has been working hard during fall camp.

"I thought overall today was a good practice," Sullivan said. "They're tired, but they are still pushing themselves through it. We have to keep going for the next couple of days and hopefully we'll get their legs back under them and put a little spit and polish on it."

Sullivan pointed out several newcomers who have caught his eye so far during preseason practice.

"Some of the young guys have proven they are going to be able to come in and help us," Sullivan said. "(Wide Receiver) Kelvin Clay and all of our young running backs are going to help us. (Offensive lineman) Kyle Champion has had a good camp. (Defensive linemen) Jerry Mathis and Justin Minick have had a good camp so far on the defensive side. They've got a ways to go, but I think they have a chance to help us."

Sullivan also praised the work so far of the team's punters.

"I've been really pleased with the way our punters have been coming on," Sullivan said. "I think Greg Peranich has had a good camp and has gotten better, and then Michael O'Neal, the transfer from Alabama I think has gotten better every day."

The Bulldogs will practice again on Thursday. The workout is scheduled to begin at 9:10 a.m. at Seibert Stadium.

Samford is preparing for its season-opener against fourth-ranked Georgia Southern on Sept. 3. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff from Seibert Stadium.
