BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Trips to Kentucky, Florida and a tournament at DePaul highlight the 2011-12 Samford women's basketball schedule, released by Head Coach Mike Morris on Thursday.

"I believe with playing Florida, Kentucky, Western Kentucky, and with the potential of playing DePaul, this is the most challenging schedule we've ever had," Morris said. "I'm sure our players will be excited about the opportunity to play these quality programs."

Morris said he hopes the strong schedule will help his team prepare for another tough season of Southern Conference competition.

"One of the main reasons for playing these type teams and programs is to better prepare your team for conference play and for the conference tournament, to be tougher and better toward the end of the season," Morris said. "Playing quality teams, as much as anything else, can expose weaknesses early so we can improve on them before we start conference play and definitely before we get to the conference tournament."

The Bulldogs open the season at the Maggie Dixon Classic, hosted by DePaul University in Chicago. Samford will take on Montana in the first round on Nov. 11. The Bulldogs will then take on either DePaul or St. Mary's on Nov. 12 on the final day of the tournament.

Samford will play at Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala., on Nov. 16. The Bulldogs will then take part in the UAB Thanksgiving Classic, Nov. 25 and 26, at Bartow Arena. Samford will take on Western Kentucky and former Ohio Valley Conference rival Southeast Missouri in the tournament.

The Bulldogs will then play host to in-state rival Jacksonville State, on Nov. 30, for the first home game of the season.

Samford will open defense of its 2011 Southern Conference championship with games at UNC Greensboro (Dec. 3) and Elon (Dec. 5).

Samford will play host to Tennessee Tech, the third OVC opponent on the 2011-12 schedule, on Dec. 10, before returning to SoCon play with a home game against Western Carolina on Dec. 17.

The team's final game before Christmas break will be at Southeastern Conference power Kentucky on Dec. 21. The Bulldogs return from the break to face another SEC opponent, playing at Florida on Dec. 28.

Samford opens the 2012 portion of its schedule with back-to-back road conference games. The Bulldogs play at Georgia Southern (Jan. 7) and College of Charleston (Jan. 9) to open the month of January.

Next up for the Bulldogs are home games against Furman (Jan. 13) and Wofford (Jan. 15). The team then goes back out on the road for its next three games at Chattanooga (Jan. 18), Davidson (Jan. 21) and Appalachian State (Jan. 23).

The Bulldogs then return home for games against Elon on Jan. 28 and UNC Greensboro on Jan. 30. After a road game at Wofford (Feb. 6), Samford will play home games against Georgia Southern (Feb. 11) and College of Charleston (Feb. 13).

Following road games at Furman (Feb. 18) and Western Carolina (Feb. 20), Samford will wrap up the regular season with home games against Chattanooga (Feb. 22), Appalachian State (Feb. 25) and Davidson (Feb. 27).

The 2012 Southern Conference Tournament is scheduled to be played Mar. 2-5. This year's tournament will be played in Asheville, N.C.
