Fieldbinder Named Assistant Coach Of The Year

Sept. 6, 2011

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford pitching coach Mick Fieldbinder has been named the Assistant Coach of the Year by the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association (ALABCA), the organization announced recently.

"This is a well-deserved honor for Mick," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "He has done an outstanding job with our pitching staff. His work with our pitching staff was one of the main reasons why we set a school record for wins last season."

In 2011, Fieldbinder's pitching staff posted the lowest earned run average in the Southern Conference with a 3.11 ERA. The staff also led the conference in opponent batting average (.242), runs allowed (237), earned runs allowed (181), doubles allowed (76) and strikeouts (479).

Three members of Fieldbinder's staff were selected in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft. Relievers Grant Sides and Andrew Jones, and starting pitcher Josh Martin were all taken in the MLB Draft.

"Over the last four years, he has really helped me with the mental aspect of the game, making me strive to reach greater heights," Jones said. "He definitely knows how to get the most out of his players and nobody works harder than he does. Last season, everything came together that he has been teaching us and we had one of the best seasons as a staff in Samford history."

Fieldbinder guided his 2011 staff to school records in ERA, strikeouts, saves, fewest earned runs allowed and lowest opponent batting average. The opponent batting average record broke the previous record set by Fieldbinder's 2007 staff.

"No one works as hard as Coach Fieldbinder," Sides said. "He always challenged us and pushed us to improve. He inspired us to work hard and it paid off in the end."

Fieldbinder has been on the Samford coaching staff for seven seasons. His 2006 pitching staff led the Ohio Valley Conference in ERA, and it finished third in the league in 2007.
