BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team will play host to the Penn State Nittany Lions in a three-game series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams will play Saturday at 2 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. and Monday at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs enter the game with a record of 6-3. Samford dropped a 13-6 decision at Troy Tuesday evening.

Samford is led at the plate by Saxon Butler, batting a Southern Conference-best .500 with two home runs and 12 RBI. Brandon Miller leads the team and the Southern Conference in home runs with six and in RBI with 16. Austin Allison is batting .400 with nine RBI.

Samford is scheduled to start Kyle Putkonen on the mound in the series-opener on Saturday. Putkonen enters the weekend with a record of 0-1 and an ERA of 3.27.

Charles Basford is scheduled to start Sunday's game on the mound for the Bulldogs. Basford has a record of 1-0 and an ERA of 4.22 coming into the series.

On Monday, Samford is scheduled to start Josh Martin on the mound. Martin is 2-0 with a 5.23 ERA so far this season.

The Nittany Lions are currently 1-5 on the young season. Penn State last played last weekend and the Nittany Lions were swept in a series at UNC Greensboro.

PSU is led at the plate by Jordan Steranka, batting .385 with a home run and two RBI. Luis Montesinos and Zach Ell share the team lead in RBI with four each.

Prior to this weekend's series, Samford and Penn State have met just once on the diamond. The teams played on March 8, 1995, in Birmingham, with Samford winning by a score of 8-6.
