WBB To Take On Elon In SoCon Quarterfinals Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The fourth-seeded Samford women's basketball team will open play in the Southern Conference Tournament by taking on fifth-seeded Elon in the quarterfinal round Saturday at 3 p.m. (CT) at UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena.

Samford will be looking for its second-straight SoCon Tournament title after winning the event for the first time last season. Now in its fourth season in the league, Samford has a record of 6-2 in SoCon Tournament games, including a 1-0 record against Elon in the tournament.

Samford finished the regular-season with a record of 17-12 overall and 12-8 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs are coming off a 52-39 loss to regular-season champion Davidson on Monday.

In the loss to Davidson, Samford was led in scoring by senior guard Ruth Ketcham with 10 points. Freshman forward Taylor Reece added nine points for the Bulldogs.

For the season, Samford is led in scoring by senior guard Paige Anderson, averaging 13.1 points per game. Ketcham and Taylor are tied for the second on the team in scoring, with an average of 8.9 points per game.

Earlier this week, Anderson was named All-Conference by the SoCon coaches and second-team All-Conference by the media. Reece was named to the All-Freshman team by both the coaches and the media.

Junior forward Hannah Dawson leads Samford in rebounding, pulling down 4.8 boards per contest. Ketcham ranks second on the squad in rebounding, averaging 4.1 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Jazmine Powers is the team leader in assists, dishing out 3.6 assists per game. Ketcham is second on the team in assists as well, with an average of 2.2 assists per game.

Elon has a record of 16-13 overall and 12-8 in Southern Conference play. The Phoenix is coming off a 73-46 win over Western Carolina on Monday.

Elon is led in scoring by Ali Ford, averaging 14.6 points per game. Kelsey Evans is second in scoring, with an average of 11.8 points per game.

Evans leads the team in rebounding, pulling down 7.5 boards per contest. Sam Coffer is second on the squad in rebounding, with an average of 4.7 rebounds per game.

Aiesha Harper is Elon's team leader in assists, dishing out 4.0 assists per game. Ford ranks second on the team in assists, averaging 2.5 assists per game.

Samford and Elon will be meeting for the 10th time, with Samford holding a 6-3 advantage in the series. The teams split the two regular-season meetings this season, with Elon winning the first game, 69-44, at Elon. Samford won the meeting in Birmingham, 67-53.

Samford is 3-1 in games played at Elon, 2-2 against the Phoenix in Birmingham, and the Bulldogs won the lone neutral-site meeting in the 2010 SoCon Tournament, defeating the Phoenix by a score of 57-38.
