WBB To Take On App. State For SoCon Title For Second-Straight Year

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - For the second-straight season, Samford and Appalachian State will meet in the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Tournament championship game. The Bulldogs and the Mountaineers will play for the tournament title Monday afternoon at 4 p.m. (CT) at the U.S. Cellular Center.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and on the Southern Conference Sports Network.

Samford enters the game with an overall record of 19-12. The Bulldogs advanced to the finals by defeating top-seeded Davidson, 62-51, in Sunday's semifinal round.

In the win over Davidson, Samford was led by sophomore guard Shelby Campbell with a career-high 24 points. Senior guard Ruth Ketcham scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Bulldogs.

For the season, Samford is led in scoring by senior guard Paige Anderson, averaging 12.7 points per game. Ketcham and freshman forward Taylor Reece are tied for second on the team in scoring, both averaging 8.9 points per game.

Junior forward Hannah Dawson leads Samford in rebounding, pulling down 4.8 boards per contest. Ketcham is second on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.3 rebounds per game.

Senior guard Jazmine Powers is the team leader in assists, dishing out 3.6 assists per game. Ketcham is also second on the squad in assists, averaging 2.0 assists per game.

Appalachian State is currently 25-5. The Mountaineers defeated third-seeded Chattanooga, 77-52 in Sunday's second semifinal game.

Appalachian State is led in scoring by Anna Freeman, averaging 15.3 points per game. Courtney Freeman is second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.8 points per game.

Kelsey Sharkey leads the Mountaineers in rebounding, pulling down 6.6 boards per contest. Anna Freeman is second in rebounding, with an average of 6.5 rebounds per game.

Anna Freeman is the team leader in assists, dishing out 2.8 assists per game. Chakeitha Weldon is second on the team in assists, averaging 2.7 assists per game.

Samford and Appalachian State will be meeting for the 11th time, with the series tied, 5-5. Appalachian State swept the regular-season series this year. ASU won the first game in Boone, N.C., 53-49, and they won the meeting in Birmingham, 57-53.

Samford has a record of 1-3 against ASU in Birmingham, and the Bulldogs are 2-2 in games played in Boone. Samford is 2-0 against ASU at neutral sites. This marks the third-straight season Samford and ASU have met in the SoCon Tournament and the second-straight season the two teams have met in the title game.

Samford has an all-time record of 8-2 in Southern Conference Tournament games. The Bulldogs have won their last five Southern Conference Tournament games and seven of their last eight games in the tournament.
