Women's Golf Holds Third Place After Opening Day Of Samford Intercollegiate

ONEONTA, Ala. - The Samford University women's golf team carded a two-round score of 610 on Monday as the Bulldogs turned in identical marks of 305 to open the 2012 Samford Intercollegiate being held at the Limestone Springs Golf Course. Samford concluded the day in third place and boasted three players ranked amongst the top-five performers.

Samford, which was the most consistent team of the highly-competitive 10-squad tournament Monday, trails only second-place Middle Tennessee by seven strokes and first-place Florida Southern by nine shots. The final round of 2012 Samford Intercollegiate will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) with a shotgun start.

Following Monday's first two rounds of competition, Florida Southern leads the field with a 36-hole score of 601 (298-303). The Mocs hold a two-stroke advantage over second-place Middle Tennessee, which concluded the opening two rounds of play with a score of 603 (298-305).

Samford holds third place along with ULM as the teams both posted first-day marks of 610. The Warhawks turned in first and second-round scores of 303 and 307, respectively. Troy rounded out the top five Monday by carding a 36-hole mark of 613 (307-306).

The Bulldogs were led on the opening day of the 2012 Samford Intercollegiate by true freshman Bailey Gray who turned in a two-round score of 149 (76-73). She will head into Tuesday's final round of competition tied for fifth place in the individual standings.

Samford junior Anna Heim finished Monday's competition tied for 15th place as she carded a 36-hole mark of 152 (73-79). Following Heim, the Bulldogs' Emily Stallings and Sarah Butts both finished with identical scores of 155. Sophomore Alex Jasper closed out the day with a two-round tally of 157 (79-78).

Performing as individuals on the opening day of the 2012 Samford Intercollegiate were the Bulldogs' Natalie Mitchell and Kayla Turner. Mitchell turned in the best performance of the tournament Monday as is currently leading the two-day competition with a 1-under-par 143 (71-72). Turner, Samford's junior native of Clarksville, Tenn., fired a two-round score of 146 (73-73) and is currently tied for second place.

The 2012 Samford Intercollegiate is scheduled to resume Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) as the final round of competition will be held at the Limestone Springs Golf Course.
