BOONE, N.C. ---- Samford played a second game Wednesday, as they faced the No. 1 seed Georgia Southern in a close 3-0 loss that stretched past midnight.
Samford (14-41, 6-18 SoCon) out-hit the Eagles 5-3, but one big swing by Georgia Southern (39-17, 22-2 SoCon) proved the difference in a low-scoring affair. Madison Dickey went 2-3 at the plate to extend her hitting streak to 11 games, the longest for any Bulldog this season. Robyn Harmon (5-11), who won Wednesday's first game against Furman, pitched the full 6.0 innings but earned the tough loss. SoCon Pitcher of the Year Sarah Purvis (21-9) earned the win for Georgia Southern, throwing nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
In the bottom of the second, Georgia Southern put two on base with two out, setting up Kaitlyn Johnson for a line drive homer that just cleared the fence in left, putting the Eagles up 3-0 early. Offense was at a premium for most of the game until the top of the sixth, when Samford earned back-to-back singles to put the potential tying run at the plate with one out. A wild pitch moved them over to second and third, but a strikeout and a long fly ball ended the threat with Samford still trailing, 3-0. The Bulldogs were looking to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh, but the Eagles shut them down as they held on for the 3-0 victory.
Samford's next game is set for 2 p.m. ET Thursday as they will play the loser of the Appalachian State versus UNCG game, which takes place at 10 a.m. ET.
