SAMFORD CONCLUDES REGULAR SEASON AT WESTERN CAROLINA
Samford concludes its 2012 regular season with a three-game road trip to Cullowhee, N.C. to face Western Carolina. The series begins with a double header on Saturday, May 5 at 2 p.m. CT and concludes with a third game on Sunday, May 6 at noon CT. The series has extra importance, as it will play a crucial role in determining tournament seedings heading into next week.
OPPONENT SCOUTING REPORT
Western Carolina (21-32, 6-15 SoCon) - The Catamounts have won two conference series this season, taking two out of three against Furman and sweeping Elon. They rank in the conference top three in multiple offensive categories, helped largely by April SoCon Athlete of the Month Erin Foster who hit .417 during the month with 17 home runs, 19 RBI and tallied a 12-game hit streak. She leads the team with a season average of .367, 17 home runs and 51 RBI. Jordan Garrett (9-17) has seen the most time in the circle, logging 162.2 innings with a 3.96 ERA and 136 strikeouts.
LAST TIME OUT: APPALACHIAN STATE
The Bulldogs took a key conferece series late in the season, taking two out of three games from Appalachian State with some late-game heroics in game two and three. Samford lost its first game of the series, giving up a six-run lead as the Mountaineers charged back for a 8-6 victory. The Bulldogs bounced back in game two, winning 11-7 with their second-highest scoring output of the season. Samford trailed by as much as five, with the Mountaineers pulling ahead 7-2 after 4 1/2 innings. In the top of the fifth, Samford scored two to make the score 7-4 and then scored three runs in the top of the sixth, helped out by five Appalachian State errors, to tie the game at 7-7. In the bottom of the seventh, the bases were loaded with two outs for Alex Adams as she came through in a big way, launching a walk-off grand slam to left center to give the Bulldogs the 11-7 win.
In game three, the teams battled back and forth all game with the Bulldogs scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth and then shutting down the Mountaineers, 1-2-3, in the top of the seventh to preserve the 5-4 victory. With the teams tied at 1-1, Samford pulled ahead 4-1 with a three-run homer by Madison Dickey in the bottom of the second. A two-run homer and an RBI single by Appalachian State tied the game but a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth allowed Samford to score the go-ahead run to move up 5-4. Robyn Harmon shut them down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to earn the complete game win and give the Bulldogs the series win.
IT'S A MAD HOUSE
Madison Dickey had a stellar weekend against Appalachian State, leading the team with a scorching .615 average (8-15), extending her hitting streak to six games. Her home run in Sunday's game is her sixth of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Misha Aldridge. She has hit .420 in conference games this season (29-69), including six doubles, four home runs and nine RBI.
LOAD `EM UP
Alex Adams' walk-off grand slam shows why she has been a steady presence in the heart of the order, as she has been the best Samford hitter in bases-loaded situations this season. She is 4-7 in bases-loaded situations with 11 RBI and two home runs. In those 11 opportunities, she has only grounded into one double play.
