KENNESAW, Ga. -- The Samford University men's golf team will begin play in its fourth tournament of the 2013 fall season Monday as the Bulldogs square off against participants from 11 teams at the second-annual Pinetree Intercollegiate being hosted by Kennesaw State University, Oct. 21-22, at the par-72, 7,108-yard Pinetree Country Club.
The format of the tournament calls for 54 holes to be played over two days, with 36 holes scheduled on Monday (Oct. 21) and the final 18 holes slated for Tuesday (Oct. 22). Play begins with a 7 a.m. (CDT) start with teams teeing off from holes No. 1 and No. 10. Tuesday's final round is slated for 7:20 a.m., with teams also teeing off on the first and 10th holes.

The field for this week's 2013 Pinetree Intercollegiate will be comprised of the following: Samford, host-school Kennesaw State, Akron, Ball State, Florida Gulf Coast, Indiana, Louisville, Northern Illinois, Troy, UT-Pan American, Winthrop and Wofford. Kennesaw State is the lone team in the field ranked in the Top 50 as the Owls are No. 43 in Golfstat and No. 44 by Golfweek.

Samford heads into this week's tournament looking to post its best finish of the 2013 fall campaign.

Last week, the Bulldogs earned a 12th-place finish at the highly-competitive Donald Ross Intercollegiate hosted by Appalachian State University at the Mimosa Hills Country Club. Two of Samford's starters, Zach Hughes and Mac Hennessy, battled through bouts of the flu throughout the tournament.

Samford concluded the 54-hole, three-round competition with a total team score of 871 (293-288-290). The Bulldogs finished just three strokes behind 10th place Stetson (868).

True freshman Garrett Moores paced Samford with a 4-over-par tally of 214 (71-72-71), while sophomore Chris Clouser posted a 7-over-par 217 (75-71-71) and Hughes overcame his severe flu-like symptoms to card a 54-hole score of 222 (71-77-74).

Moores concluded the tournament tied for 28th place as Clouser returned to the clubhouse deadlocked in the 37th position in the individual standings.

The Bulldogs' scoring was rounded out Tuesday by true freshman Austin Jackson (78-73-74 = 225) and senior William Catanzaro (76-72-80 = 228).

Originally designed by noted architect Chick Adams and opened in 1962, Pinetree Country Club's 18- hole championship golf course has long been regarded as among the finest private golf courses in Georgia. Her sublime parkland beauty and challenging layout attracted Georgia State Amateur Championship in 1976, 1985, 2003 and the upcoming 2013 Championship, as well as qualifying for numerous Georgia and U.S. Amateur Championships.
Over the years, the course also welcomed such legends as Arnold Palmer, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead and Tommy Aaron. After working as a golf assistant at Pinetree Country Club, Kennesaw native Larry Nelson went on to a Hall of Fame career, winning the U.S. Open and twice winning the PGA Championship.
Several years ago, members decided it was time to renovate their course, so architect Bill Bergin was retained to oversee the project. Bergin's challenge was to preserve the course's original character while improving each hole. He began work in mid-2007. The club opened for play in late October 2008 and members found the results exceeded all expectations.

Pinetree Country Club has hosted the Georgia State Amateur Championship three times (2003, 1985 and 1976) and will be hosting this prestigious event again in 2013.
Now, 7,108 yards from the championship tees, the par-72 golf course tests every club, winding through and around picturesque rolling hills, the holes framed by towering Georgia pines, flowering shrubs, native hardwoods, babbling brooks and sparkling ponds. Golfers can enjoy an exciting and challenging playing experience regardless of age or skill.
