Bulldogs Head To Daytona Beach For Fall Finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Samford University women's golf team will compete in its fourth and final tournament of the 2013 fall campaign this weekend as the Bulldogs participate in the LPGA Xavier Collegiate Invitational being held Saturday through Monday at the par-72, 6,178-yard LPGA International Golf Course.

Along with Samford and host-school Xavier University, this weekend's highly-competitive field will also include Bethune-Cookman, Creighton, Daytona State, Florida Atlantic, Florida Gulf Coast, Illinois State, McNeese State, Mercer, Morehead State, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Northern Kentucky, Stetson, South Dakota, South Dakata State and UNF.

The 2013 LPGA Xavier Invitational is a 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played on each day of the competition. The first two rounds will have a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. (CDT), and the final round will have a shotgun start at 7:15 a.m. After the first day of competition, the hole assignments will be determined by teams' 18-hole, and 36-hole scores.

So far this season, under the direction of first-year head coach Rachel Ingram, Samford has recorded top-notch finishes of first, second and eighth place. The Bulldogs cruised to the championship title of the 2013 FedEx Memphis Women's Intercollegiate on Sept. 10, and then earned a runner-up finish at the talent-laden Great Smokies Intercollegiate on Sept. 17.

In Samford's most recent outing, senior Natalie Mitchell registered a three-day, 54-hole total of 3-over-par 219 (76-70-73) on Sept. 22, to lead the Bulldogs to an eighth-place finish at the esteemed Lady Paladin Invitational Golf Tournament held at the par-72, 6,266-yard Furman University Golf Course.

Mitchell, the Bulldogs' talented native of Germantown, Tenn., finished the three-round competition tied for 12^th place in the massive 90-player field. Her round of 2-under-par 70 in the second round proved to be Samford's best score of the weekend.

As a team, the Bulldogs earned an eighth-place finish and concluded the event just three strokes behind Texas A&M and six behind Florida State. Samford carded a final team score of 900 (307-291-302) and blistered the course on the second day with its tournament-best round of 291.

Samford's Sydney Needham finished the 42nd-annual Lady Paladin Invitational Golf Tournament with a solid three-day score of 224 (75-73-76). Just a true freshman, the Bulldogs' talented native of Carrollton, Ga., earned a 21st-place finish at the highly-competitive, 16-team tournament.

Earlier this season, Needham claimed Individual Medalist honors at the 2013 FedEx Memphis Intercollegiate and then garnered runner-up accolades at last week's Great Smokies Intercollegiate.

The Samford University women's golf team will begin play in the 2013 LPGA Xavier International on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs square off against 17 talent-laden teams at the pristine LPGA International Golf Course.
