Bulldogs Fall to Eagles in Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STATESBORO, Ga. ---- Samford fell in a pair of tough games at Georgia Southern in a Saturday conference doubleheader as the Eagles swept the Bulldogs, 6-0 and 4-2.

Samford (11-26, 3-11 SoCon) would only earn one hit in the opening game but out-hit the home team, 5-4, in game two but a late comeback bid would fall just short.  Shelby Scott was the only player to earn a hit in both games, including her first home run of the season in game two.

Georgia Southern (22-23, 8-5 SoCon) leaned on two good outings from their pitchers while the offense did just enough to win both games.  Right fielder Kaitlyn Johnson had a great day at the plate, going a combined 4-6 with three RBI, including a solo homer.

GAME ONE: GEORGIA SOUTHERN 6, SAMFORD 0

Eagle starter Sarah Purvis (10-11) was perfect through 4.2 innings, allowing only one hit in a 6-0 shutout victory over Samford in game one.  Caitlin Bice (0-5) threw the opening 2.0 innings with Misha Aldridge throwing 4.0 relief innings behind her, while the Eagles took advantage of three Bulldog errors with half of their runs going as unearned runs.

Georgia Southern struck first as they loaded the bases with nobody out and drove in a pair of runs with back-to-back groundouts to the right side.  Callie Brister limited the damage, diving towards the pitcher's circle for a lineout to end the inning as the Bulldogs trailed 2-0.

The Eagles added three more runs in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of an error with one earned and two unearned runs as the lead swelled to 5-0 early.  Misha Aldridge entered to pitch for the Bulldogs in the third, loading the bases with one out but a 5-2-3 double play ended the threat as the Eagles could not add to their five-run lead.

Scott broke up Purvis' perfect game in the top of the fifth with a two-out single that went just over the glove of a jumping Andrea Tarashuk at third base, though she would ultimately be left stranded.  In the bottom-half of the inning with two outs, Kaitlyn Johnson sent a ball over the fence for a solo home run to move the Eagles up 6-0.

Neither team would score in the sixth inning and the Bulldogs went three up, three down in the seventh as Purvis held on for the complete-game one hit victory.

GAME TWO: GEORGIA SOUTHERN 4, SAMFORD 2

The Eagles took game two as they held on to an early lead 3-0 lead, holding off the Bulldog offense to eventually win, 4-2.  Allie Miles (6-6) Scott (2-9) both went the distance in the circle.

With two on base and one away in the bottom of the first, a single to right field and an error on the play plated two for the home team as they went up 2-0 with a runner at third and nobody out.  After a strikeout, a single into shallow right-center would drive in the runner from third and a popup would end the inning with Georgia Southern leading, 3-0.

In the top of the third with one out, Arica Dykes hit a single that just dropped fair down the right-field line and, after stealing second, Megan Dowdy dropped a single into shallow left to put runners at the corners.  A wild pitch moved Dowdy into scoring position and Callie Brister grounded out to second, though it allowed Dykes to score from third as the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to 3-1.  A strikeout ended the inning with Samford stranding a runner at third.

Eagle right fielder Johnson would build on the Georgia Southern lead in the bottom of the fifth with a deep RBI double to the wall in right center as the home team went up 4-1.  In the top of the sixth, Scott would help her own cause with a solo homer to left field, her first of the year, as the Bulldogs now trailed 4-2.  Samford would be shut down in order in the top of the seventh however as the comeback bid fell short.

The three-game series concludes tomorrow with a single game at 1 p.m. ET at Eagle Field.
