Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. ---- Riding the momentum of a key win earlier in the day, Samford was looking to upset top-seeded Appalachian State in an extra-inning battle that included a 90-minute weather delay. The Mountianeers would ultimately come out on top however, as a tenth-inning RBI single gave them the 3-2 walkoff win.
Samford (15-33, 6-15 SoCon) and Appalachian State (30-20, 17-7 SoCon) wouldn't earn a hit until the third inning and the game would remain scoreless until the final inning of regulation.
Megan Dowdy and
Kayla Shaffer each went 2-5 on the day and drove in Samford's two runs batting in the top two spots in the order. Samford limited SoCon Player of the Year Allie Cashion to only one hit in five at-bats, but her one hit was the game winning RBI single in extras.
Shelby Scott threw 7.0 solid innings but allowed Appalachian State to tie it in the seventh as
Misha Aldridge (3-5) took the tough-luck loss in the 10th thanks to the international tie-breaker rule.
In the top of the seventh, Aldridge would lead off the inning with a single and, two outs later,
Caroline Seay would drop a single into shallow left to put the potential go-ahead run in scoring position.
Megan Dowdy drove in the first run of the game with a single over the glove of a jumping Mountaineer second baseman, as pinch-runner
Arica Dykes scored to put Samford up 1-0.
Kayla Shaffer followed with a single through the right side, scoring Seay to put Samford up 2-0 but Dowdy was tagged out at home as the trail runner for the final out of the half-inning.
The Mountaineers threatened right away, leading off the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles. The pair was sacrificed into scoring position and a single into shallow center scored one and put runners at the corners with one away. A sacrifice fly into center field tied it at 2-2 and advanced the runner to second but a groundout to
Abby Adams kept the Bulldogs alive as the teams would head into extra innings tied at 2-2.
After a fly out and a walk to lead off the top of the eighth, lightning in the area forced a 90 minute weather delay. After play resumed, Scott reached off a fielder's choice with
Madeline Baker, pinch-running for
Alex Adams, out at second and Aldridge was called swinging on a close check-swing call for the final out of the half-inning.
Appalachian State drew back-to-back walks to lead off the eighth, which ended Scott's outing in the circle as Aldridge came in a tough relief situation. The senior got out of the jam, forcing two groundouts and a strikeout to force another inning.
With both teams going scoreless in the ninth, it forced international tiebreaker rules, placing a runner at second to start the inning. With Seay placed at second, Dowdy led off the inning with a bunt single, advancing Seay to third, and Shaffer followed with a fly ball to left field. Seay looked to put the Bulldogs ahead, tagging up on the fly ball but a good throw by Allie Cashion in left was in time to catch Seay at home for two quick outs on one play. A groundout ended the top half of the inning.
The Mountaineers sacrificed the placed runner over to third to lead off the 10th, successfully putting the potential runner 60 feet away. In the next at-bat, she was caught in a big lead on a bunt attempt as the Bulldogs eventually caught her in a rundown to put two away with the bases empty. Appalachian State kept their hopes alive with back-to-back singles and Cashion ended it with a single to left field as the Mountaineers earned the 3-2 walkoff win in 10 innings.
Samford's next game will be tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. ET where they will face the loser of tonight's UNCG/Furman game.
