Samford’s head men’s golf coach fires a 3-under-par 69 to earn the coveted spot
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Woodie Eubanks, who is in the midst of his 11th season as Samford's men's golf coach, proved to be one of only six players from the state of Alabama to earn a spot in the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, which will be played at the Country Club of Birmingham Oct. 5-10.
Â
Eubanks turned in a sizzling 3-under-par 69 in the qualifying tournament held at Shoal Creek Country Club and made it through with ease. On Monday, he registered birdies on Nos. 2, 11, 15 and 16 against a lone bogey on No. 12. Additionally, he chipped in for birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.
Â
Eubanks also qualified for last year's Mid-Amateur, which was held at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Ill.
Â
"I'm ecstatic to qualify," said Eubanks. "I thought 72 would make it, so to shoot 69 was special. I'm looking forward to playing in a national championship in my hometown at a course I'm comfortable playing."
Â
Also joining Eubanks in the upcoming Mid-Amateur Championship with be Alabama natives Clint Provost, Steve Hudson, Will Swift, Bo Farlow and Matthew Myers. Provost qualified by surviving an 11-hole playoff, while Hudson, Swift, Farlow and Myers all shot 73 Monday in the qualifier at Shoal Creek and faced a playoff, with the five playing off for four spots.
Â
A native of Trussville, Eubanks is a multiple winner of the State Mid-Amateur, State Four Ball (with Forrest Crabtree) and has been State Club Team individual champion. He fired a 69 this week to claim a coveted spot in the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
