BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Wofford quarterback Michael Weimer scored on a one-yard sneak with 4:34 to go in the game to give the Terriers a 24-20 win over Samford in Southern Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

After the touchdown, Samford drove to the Wofford 24 yard line. On a fourth-and-one play, however, the Terrier defense held Samford to no gain, turning the ball over to Wofford.

"It's always a tough game when we play these guys," Samford assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Bill D'Ottavio said. "It's always a four-quarter deal. Today they made more plays than we did and we came up a little short."

The eventual game-winning touchdown by Weimer capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive that took seven minutes and 28 seconds off the fourth-quarter clock.

"We knew going in it was going to be that type of game," D'Ottavio said. "Whether they were up or we were up, we were going to have to keep scratching and fighting. Our kids were ready to do that and they did that for four quarters right until the last tick of the clock. But we fell short and we're disappointed with that and we'll go back to work tomorrow."

For Samford individually in the game, quarterback Michael Eubank completed 32-of-43 yards for a career-high 305 yards and one interception. Eubank also had one rushing touchdown in the contest.

Samford running back Denzel Williams rushed 12 times for 48 yards and a touchdown. Williams also caught five passes for 63 yards. Emmanuel Obajimi led all receivers with seven catches for 64 yards.

Justin Cooper led the Samford defense with 13 tackles, all solo. Jaquiski Tartt had 10 total tackles, including nine solo stops. James Bradberry had an interception for the Bulldog defense.

For Wofford, Lorenzo Long rushed 20 times for 128 yards. Weimer completed 7-of-13 passes for 67 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Weimer also rushed 11 times for 25 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Kevin Thomas led the way with eight tackles.

Wofford jumped on top first late in the first quarter. David Marvin kicked a 44-yard field goal with 2:38 left in the period for a 3-0 Terrier lead. Wofford struck again before the end of the first quarter. After a Samford fumble gave the Terriers the ball at the Samford 16-yard line, Wofford scored five plays later on a three-yard run by Cam Flowers for a 10-0 Terrier lead with 13 seconds left in the first quarter.

Samford put its first point on the scoreboard midway through the second quarter. Warren Handrahan kicked a 23-yard field goal with 7:02 left before halftime to cut the Wofford lead to 10-3.

The Bulldogs tied the game late in the second quarter. Samford went on an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took one minute and 57 seconds, culminating in an eight-yard touchdown run by Eubank. The touchdown knotted the score at 10-10 with 41 seconds to go before halftime.

Wofford took the lead again on the first drive of the third quarter. Weimer hit Zach Muller for a three-yard touchdown with 11:13 left in the quarter. The score gave Wofford a 17-10 lead.

The Bulldogs tied the game on the ensuing drive. Williams scored on a one-yard run to cap a 10-play, 83-yard drive that lasted two minutes and 51 seconds to knot the score at 17-17.

Samford took its only lead of the game early in the fourth quarter. Bradberry intercepted a Wofford pass, giving Samford the ball at the Terriers' 18-yard line with 14:00 left in the game. Four plays later, Handrahan kicked a 34-yard field goal to give Samford a 20-17 lead with 12:02 remaining in the contest.

As a team, Samford tallied 354 yards of total offense, compared to 264 for Wofford.  With the loss, Samford drops to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in Southern Conference play. Wofford improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Samford will travel to Greenville, S.C. on Oct. 25, to take on the Furman Paladins. The game is scheduled for a 12:30 p.m. (CT) start from Paladin Stadium.
