BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The Samford University volleyball team extended its winning streak to six games with a 3-0 victory over Mercer University on Wednesday, Oct. 08, inside the Pete Hanna Center.
The Bulldogs (10-7, 4-0 SoCon) offense was efficient in the first set thanks to senior
Michaela Reesor, sophomore
Erin Bognar and junior
Emily Meitz's efforts. Reesor tallied seven kills while Bognar notched five and Meitz contributed four in the 25-20 decision over the Bears (4-12, 1-3 SoCon).
Meitz continued her blocking extravaganza in the match as she stonewalled five Mercer attacks. Over the Bulldogs six-match win streak Meitz has racked up 25 total blocks.
The Bears put up fight in the second set but still fell 25-21 thanks to solid team play and passing from libero
Chelsi Carter who recorded six of her 13 digs in the second set.
After posting attack percentages of .378 and .344 the Bulldogs hit a wall in the third set and posted a .242 attack percentage that allowed Mercer to make a run at winning the third set. MU and SU went through 12 ties and six lead changes before Samford pulled out the 25-20 victory to seal the match.
Bognar finished the night with a team-high 16 kills on 26 attempts (.500) while Reesor tabbed 13 kills on 26 attempts (.346). Meitz added nine kills to her five total blocks to wrap up the match.
Samford hits the road this weekend but continues Southern Conference play with matches against UNCG on Friday, Oct. 10, and against Wofford College on Saturday, Oct. 11. Both matches can be viewed on the SoCon Digital Network.
