BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns on Saturday as the Bulldogs moved to 3-4 when playing at home in the Samford Tennis Center this season.
"We lost to a tough team today," said Samford head coach Rahim Esmail. "I thought we did a good job with our energy in the doubles. It was tight on both courts No. 1 and No. 2, but we got down a break at 5-4 on both courts and that was the difference. We competed well at some spots but came up short. We are making progress in certain positions and in certain areas, and need to continue to work, so when opportunities come, we are able to take advantage of them."
Samford (3-8) dropped its second-consecutive match to Louisiana-Lafayette (12-4) after falling short in a hard-fought 4-3 road decision against the Ragin' Cajuns last season.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs were swept in doubles play, and then dropped decisions in six of the singles contests. The closest matches of the day occurred on courts No. 3 and No. 4 where Samford's Austin Akers and Trey Carter nearly pulled out three-set victories.
In the No. 3 singles contest, the Bulldogs' Akers won the second set, 6-1, but then came up short against Louisiana-Lafayette's Edgar Lopez in the third frame, 6-3. On court No. 4, Samford's Carter proved to be victorious in the opening set 7-6(5) before Hunter Johnson rallied back to with the next two stanzas, 6-2, 1-0 (7).
The Samford University men's tennis team will next be in action March 22 at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs conclude their three-match homestand against the Davidson Wildcats in a key Southern Conference contest to be held at the Samford Tennis Center.
