Bulldogs Head To Orlando To Face UCF Tuesday

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The No. 73-ranked Samford University women's tennis team will attempt to extend its winning streak to 10-consecutive matches Tuesday at 1 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs begin a key three-match Spring Break road trip against the UCF Knights to be held at the UCF Tennis Complex.

Samford (11-1) heads into the contest with a full head of steam after cruising to a 6-1 Southern Conference road victory against the Davidson Wildcats on March 16 as the Bulldogs remained undefeated in league play and improved to 4-0 against conference opponents this season.

With its most recent triumph, Samford extended its winning streak to nine-consecutive matches and remained undefeated since Feb. 9. Already this season, the Bulldogs have tallied victories against Kennesaw State, Middle Tennessee, UTSA, Jacksonville State, UAB, Appalachian State, Western Carolina, South Alabama, Georgia Southern, Charlotte and Davidson.

Against Davidson, Samford swept the doubles competition and took an early 1-0 advantage in the match. The Bulldogs have been dominant in doubles play this season and own an overall 29-5 record this spring.

On court No. 1, Samford's combination of Kristin Lewis and Stephanie N'tcha improved to 4-0 this season with a hard-fought 8-7 (6) victory over the Wildcats' duo of Brites Moniz-Soares and Elaina Cummer.

The Bulldogs proved to be triumphant in five of the six singles matches versus Davidson. With its continued success this spring, Samford used the wins to tally a 6-1 victory and extend its winning streak to nine-consecutive matches.

Overall, the Bulldogs boast a phenomenal 56-13 record in singles play this season. Samford's Yasmeen Ebada extended her personal winning streak to 11-consecutive matches with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Nisha Crouser.

The Bulldogs' Jessica Northcutt, Emily Mallory, Lauren Caballero and Lewis were also winners in singles play against the Wildcats. With their triumphs, Northcutt improved to 10-2, while Mallory and Caballero both moved to 7-2 this season. Samford's Lewis extended her winning streak to three-consecutive matches and improved to 7-5 in dual-match play.

UCF (4-8) enters Tuesday's contest with aspirations of snapping a tough three-match losing streak.

Since topping UNC Asheville on March 4, 6-0, the Knights have dropped consecutive hard-fought outings against SMU, 4-3, No. 43-ranked Memphis, 5-2, and No. 39 Kansas, 4-3. In its last seven matches, UCF owns a 1-6 overall record, dating back to Feb. 19.

Against Kansas on Friday, the Jayhawks opened the day with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in doubles for the 1-0 overall lead.

Kansas then doubled its advantage to 2-0 by way of a win at No. 3 singles, but the Knights would not go away easily. At No. 6, Clare Mendell breezed past Caroline Henderson, 6-4, 6-1, and Sofia Baptista thumped Anastasija Trubica at No. 5, 6-4, 6-0.

With the afternoon locked up at 2-2, the visitors halted UCF's chance at an upset by pulling out wins at No. 4 and then No. 2. Josephine Haraldson closed out the day with the Knights' third and final point, earning a 1-6, 7-6, 6-1 comeback win at the top spot against Dylan Windom.

UCF has lost five matches this year by 4-3 margins, but in 12 contests overall; it has notched at least two points 10 times.

Following Tuesday's nonconference showdown with UCF, the Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Saturday at 11 a.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs continue their pivotal three-match Spring Break road trip against the Furman Lady Paladins in a momentous SoCon contest to be held in Greenville, S.C.
