JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The Samford University softball team fell 3-2 to Jacksonville State University on a walk-off single to left field at University Field on Thursday, April 3.
The Bulldogs plated two runs on three hits and only left one base runner stranded then held the Gamecocks to three hits while leaving 10 runners stranded.
JSU (24-9) struck first in the contest and took a 1-0 lead over SU (27-10) on an Amanda Maldonado double down the left field line to score Kalee Tabor. Tabor reached on a lead-off single earlier in the inning.
Samford bounced back in the top of the third to take the lead 2-1 over Jacksonville State on a
Caroline Wilder single up the middle that was just out of Cadi Oliver's reach at shortstop.
Arica Dykes and
Caroline Seay scored after reaching on a lead-off walk and single.
The Gamecocks threatened twice with the bases loaded and looked poised to regain the lead but great Bulldog defense in the bottom of the third and a timely strikeout in the fifth inning dealt out by
Grey Adams held JSU at bay.
JSU knotted the game at 2-2 in the sixth on a hard-hit single to center field by Ella Denes that scored Maldonado from second base.
Jacksonville State plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a Hayden Crawford single just out of the reach of
Caroline Seay's diving out-stretched glove in shallow left field.
The Bulldogs return to Southern Conference action this weekend as the team travels to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina University for a double header on Saturday, April 5, at noon.
