OXFORD, Miss. -- The Samford University women's golf team, fresh off its three-stroke championship title at the Low Country Intercollegiate, will compete in its final tournament of the 2014 regular season this weekend, Friday through Sunday, as the Bulldogs square off against 17 talent-laden teams at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate being held at the Par-72, 6,313-yard University Golf Club.
The three-day, 54-hole competition is slated to begin Friday at 8:51 a.m. (CDT) with a shotgun start. The Bulldogs' starting lineup comprised of Bailey Gray, Sydney Needham, Alex Jasper, Natalie Mitchell and Emily Stallings will begin play at 10:30 a.m.
The highly-acclaimed field for the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate will consists of the following 18 teams: Samford, host-school Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, Colorado State, East Tennessee State, Furman, GRU Augusta, Harvard, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Memphis, Murray State, Notre Dame, USF, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Texas State and Tulane.
Recently, Samford registered its second team championship of the 2013-14 season on March 24, as the Bulldogs tallied a three-stroke victory at the Low Country Intercollegiate hosted by Wofford College at the pristine South Course of the Moss Creek Golf Club.
Samford posted a final-round score of 315 and cruised to the championship title of the team event over Southern Conference-rival and defending champion Western Carolina.
Overall, the Bulldogs concluded the 10-team, two-day competition with a 36-hole tally of 628 (313-315). Western Carolina placed second at 631 (314-317), while Gardner-Webb (318-325 = 642), Bethune-Cookman (324-323 = 647) and Wofford (327-334 = 661) rounded out the top five.
Samford picked up its second team championship of the 2013-14 campaign and also finished ahead of SoCon-rivals Appalachian State (Ninth place, 681) and The Citadel (10th place, 696). Earlier this season, the Bulldogs cruised to a first-place finish at the talent-laden FedEx Memphis Women's Intercollegiate.
Already this season, in Head Coach Rachel Ingram's first year at the helm, Samford has earned four top-five finishes and eight top-10 placements. Ingram is a 2010 graduate of Ole Miss and will be returning to her alma mater this weekend for the 2014 Rebel Intercollegiate.
"Rachel is really doing a great job at Samford in her first year as a head coach and I knew she would," said Ole Miss head coach Michele Drinkard. "She has a great demeanor for working with kids and helping them improve. Samford is a lot like Ole Miss just smaller in size and she's gone in and done a great job, having won two tournaments already. I couldn't be prouder of what she's doing."
The Bulldogs dominated the individual standings of the 2014 Low Country Intercollegiate as Gray, Jasper and Needham all finished in the top five. Gray and Jasper both concluded the two-day competition tied for third place in the tournament at 157, while Needham placed fifth with a 36-hole score of 158 (79-79).
Additionally, Samford's Natalie Mitchell finished tied for 19th place with a 36-hole mark of 164 (78-86) and true freshman Arin Eddy ended the event in 26th place at 167 (89-78).
Following this weekend's Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate, the Samford University women's golf team will next be in action April 13-15, as the Bulldogs head back to Hilton Head Island, S.C., for the 2014 Southern Conference Championships being held at the pristine Moss Creek Plantation Country Club.
