Nine 'Dogs Qualify For NCAA Regional Competition

NCAA EAST REGIONAL SCHEDULE
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University track and field team prepares to send a number of student-athletes to the NCAA East Regional finals held in Jacksonville, Florida and hosted by the University of North Florida on May 29-31. The last day to turn in qualifying scores was Sunday, May 18, and the NCAA made its official announcment on qualifiers Thursday, May 22.
The Bulldogs qualified nine student-athletes, the most ever in the history of the program, for the regional competition with senior Nicole Charley leading the way with two qualifying scores to her credit. The Hoover, Alabama native will be competing in her first NCAA East Regional competition.
Charley posted a mark of 6.11m (20'0.50") in the long jump at the Alabama vs. Mississippi Border Clash on April 11, and a school-record 12.59m (41' 3.75") mark in the triple jump that she posted just this past weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
Senior Emily Allen has the best overall qualifying rank of the Bulldogs as she holds the 12th best score of the East Regional in the hammer throw. Allen posted a school-record 60.98m (200' 1") throw at the SoCon Championships on April 26, to qualify and earn her individual conference championship award in the process.
The women's team has one more automatic qualifier in junior Claire Goodson. Goodson qualifies to compete in the women's pole vault competition after a 3.98m (13' 0.75") score this past weekend at the Georgia Tech Invite. Goodson's mark is a personal and outdoor season-best to secure her spot in the regional event.
The Samford men currently have four qualifiers for the regional competition in senior Owen Wagoner and sophomores Brandon Hazouri, Adam Jones, and Steven Bastien.
Wagoner tallied a 5.10m (16' 8.75") mark on his way to a SoCon individual championship on April 26, to qualify for regional competition, while Hazouri claimed his spot with a time of 1:48.54 in the 800-meter run at the Alabama vs. Mississippi Border Clash earlier this season.
Jones and Bastien used the Georgia Tech Invite as a last-chance effort to qualify as each posted good enough times to make the regional. Jones shattered the school-record in the 1500m run with a time of 3:44.89 to earn his spot while Bastien recorded a program-best leap of 7.40m (24' 3.5") in the long jump to earn his way.
The Bulldogs played the waiting game with three fellow teammates to see if they would join them in the regional competition and the NCAA announced that those three made the list of participants. Marie Demedicis (women's 800m), Justin Emerson (men's 100m) will compete in the NCAA East Regional as well.
The times those three individuals posted this season have met qualification requirements the last two years.
