Bulldogs Fall 3-0 to Buccaneers At Home

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University volleyball team fell 3-0 at home inside the Pete Hanna Center for the first time of the 2015 season to East Tennessee State University on Friday, Oct. 9th.

The Bulldogs (7-7, 2-2 SoCon) started off the match a bit out of sync which allowed the Buccaneers (13-5, 4-1 SoCon) to race off to an 8-3 lead from which Samford could not recover from.

Freshman outside hitter Krista Boesing spurred the Bulldogs to a late rally which setter Erika Pifer capped off whenever she posted back-to-back aces and an ETSU attack error to close down the lead to 19-18.

From there the Bulldogs fended off one set point before eventually falling 26-24.

The Buccaneers jumped out in front of the Bulldogs again in the second set of the match and held a lead as large as 16-10 but the Bulldogs again rallied from behind and eventually claimed their first lead of the match 23-22 on a kill by senior middle Emily Meitz.

After taking their last timeout of the set the Buccaneers stepped back up to fend off two set points from the Bulldogs to take the set 27-25 and go into the intermission 2-0.

Boesing ended the match with 13 kills on 25 attempts (.360) while Meitz tallied five total blocks with five kills (.333) in the match.

A trio of Buccaneers posted double-digit kills in the match as Rylee Milhorn led the way with 17 kills (.333) and was followed by Briana Allmon who had 11 kills and Khadijiah Wiley who notched 10 on the night.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they play host to Western Carolina University in a Southern Conference match that will air on the SoCon Digital Network.
