STARKVILLE, Miss.—The Samford baseball team fell at 13th-ranked Mississippi State by a score of 8-2 on the second day of the Diamond Classic Saturday afternoon at Dudy-Noble Field.
For Samford in the loss, Heath Quinn went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Jared Watson went 3-for-5, while Hunter Swilling turned in a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Jared Brasher (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Samford, pitching two-thirds of an inning and surrendering five runs on one hit.
Mississippi State was led at the plate by Cody Walker, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. Cody Brown and Jake Vickerson added two hits apiece for Mississippi State. Lucas Laster (2-0) earned the win for the victorious Bulldogs, tossing 6.1 innings, giving up two runs on 11 hits.
Mississippi State got off to a fast start, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Walker drove in two runs, while Wes Rea and Luke Reynolds drove in a run each in the inning. Jacob Robson also scored on a wild pitch as MSU built an early 5-0 lead.
MSU added two runs in the third inning to push its lead to 7-0. Walker and John Holland drove in the two runs for a seven-run Mississippi State lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Mississippi State plated another run to make the score 8-0. Vickerson tripled to lead off the inning. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Robson for MSU's eighth run of the contest.
Samford scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to cut the Mississippi State lead to 8-2. With one out in the inning, Watson singled. Swilling then doubled, moving Watson to third base. Quinn then doubled, driving in Watson and Swilling for Samford's two runs.
With the loss, Samford falls to 3-6 on the young season. Mississippi State improves to 12-0 with the win.
The schedule for Sunday's final day of the tournament has been altered due to expected inclement weather.
