LEXINGTON, Va.—The Samford baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision in game two of a three-game Southern Conference series at VMI Saturday afternoon at Gray-Minor Stadium.
In the loss, Samford was led by
Richard Greene, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Damon Waller and
Heath Quinn had one hit each for the Bulldogs.
Jared Brasher (0-2) pitched 4.1 innings, giving up four runs, just three earned, on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Brasher struck out six batters, while allowing just two walks.
For VMI, Jacob Jaye and Jordan Tarsovich had two hits each. Tyler Tharp drove in three runs in a 1-for-3 performance. Will Connerley homered in the game for VMI, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Brandon Barbery (3-1) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits to earn the win for the Keydets. Taylor Edens picked up his third save of the season, tossing the final 2.1 innings for VMI.
VMI struck first with one run in the bottom of the third inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Tharp was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Jaye for the game's first run.
Samford answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning to tie the score at 1-1. With one out, Quinn singled up the middle and then moved to second base on a wild pitch. After moving to third base when
Austin Edens reached base on an error, Quinn scored on a sacrifice fly by
Alex Lee.
The Keydets took the lead again with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tharp singled to drive in Will Malbon and Thomas Stallings for the first two runs of the inning. Matt Winn later singled to drive in David Geary for a 4-1 VMI lead.
VMI added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 5-1. Stallings scored from third base when Geary reached base on an infield single for a four-run Keydet lead.
Samford plated a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the VMI lead to 5-2. Waller walked with one out in the inning. Waller then moved to second base on a ground out by
Danny Rodriguez. Greene then singled up the middle to drive in Waller to bring Samford to within three runs of VMI.
VMI plated one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Connerley led the inning off with a home run to make the final score 6-2.
With the loss, Samford falls to 10-14 overall and 3-2 in Southern Conference games. VMI improves to 6-13 overall and 2-3 in SoCon contests.
