Offense Powers 'Dogs To Road Sweep Over UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University softball team earned its first SoCon series road sweep since 2010 with an 11-3 victory over UNCG on Sunday, March 29, at the UNCG Softball Field.

Samford (23-13, 5-1 SoCon) has won six out of the last seven contests against UNCG (13-15, 0-6 SoCon) and completed its first ever sweep over the Spartans with the win. Redshirt junior Mollie Hanson (14-6) received the call yet again to start in the circle for the Bulldogs and her exceptional performance allowed her to pick up her third complete-game victory in just two days.

The Bulldogs jumped out in front of the Spartans early 2-0 when junior Callie Brister blistered the first pitch she saw over the wall in left field off of starting pitcher Mackenzie Winslow. Winslow was replaced by Alicia Bazonski after SU loaded the bases with two outs via a pair of singles and a walk.

The Spartans bounced back in the bottom of the first to plate a pair of runs and tie the game at 2-2. Nicole Thomas plated the first on an RBI single up while Hagan Kiser plated the second on a bases loaded groundout to Abbie Miranda at second.

UNCG took its first lead of the weekend 3-2 in the bottom of the third when Allison Geiner sent a shot into center field for an RBI single.

However, Samford only trailed UNCG for a short time as the team exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth. The biggest momentum swing of the game came when senior Abby Adams crushed a towering grand slam to left field after working a 1-2 count with no outs.

Sophomore Abby Sweeney started the rally in the fifth with a leadoff triple that nearly made it out of the park in right field. Hot hitting junior Caroline Wilder scored pinch runner Caroline Seay on an RBI single for the first run of the inning. Wilder finished the series 8 for 11 (.776) at the plate and notched a 4 for 5 performance on the day.

Megan Dowdy capped off the scoring in the fifth after she scored from third on a wild pitch from Danica Bishop.

The Bulldogs offense continued to work in the sixth and the seventh innings to plate three more runs. Abbie Miranda's lone hit of the game resulted in an RBI single to right center field that scored Wilder in the sixth while Brister tacked on two more runs for Samford with her second home run of the day.

Brister finished the day 3 for 5 at the plate that included a pair of home runs with four RBI and three runs scored.

SU plated 11 runs on 14 hits while UNCG tallied just three runs on nine hits; each team had a pair of errors in the contest.

The Bulldogs return to action for a solo mid-week contest against Alabama State University on Tuesday, March 31, in Montgomery, Alabama; first-pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
