Wofford Downs Baseball, Forces Second Game

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The second-seeded Samford baseball team dropped a 12-8 decision to the third-seeded Wofford Terriers Saturday morning in the Southern Conference Tournament at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
 
The same two teams will now play Saturday at 4 p.m. (CT), with the winner advancing to Sunday's championship game. Samford falls to 31-25, while Wofford improves to 39-21.
 
With Samford leading, 3-2, Wofford plated six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game. The Terriers added a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to make the score 10-3. After Samford plated three runs in the seventh inning, Wofford added a run in the seventh inning and another in the eighth for a 12-6 advantage. Samford added two final runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 12-8.
 
"We just had that one big inning that went against us today," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "It was an inning with some missed opportunities. We had a couple of defensive mistakes that led to opportunities for them and they did a nice job of capitalizing behind them."
 
For Samford at the plate, Danny Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Austin Edens went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Richard Greene went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Hunter Swilling and Jared Watson added two hits each for Samford. T.J. Dixon also homered in the game for the Bulldogs, going 1-for-5 with one RBI.
 
The two home runs for Samford extend its nation-leading total to 80 home runs. The 80 homers also set a school record for the Bulldogs.
 
Eric Wright (2-4) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs, five earned, on eight hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Jesse Travis, Devan Traglia and Cole Limbaugh also saw time on the mound for Samford.
 
For Wofford, Carson Waln went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Derek Hirsch went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Kody Ruedisili and Max McDougald had two hits and two RBI each.
 
Matthew Milburn (10-3) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up six runs on 12 hits to earn the win on the mound for Wofford. David Ehmen and John Caskey combined to finish the game for the Terriers.
