SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Samford women's basketball team held Wofford to just 27.5-percent shooting on its way to a 58-39 road Southern Conference win Saturday afternoon at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
With the win, Samford improves to 14-8 overall and 6-1 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs remain in a first-place tie with Mercer in the league standings. This marks the first time Samford has started league play at 6-1 since the 2012-13 season. Wofford drops to 7-14 overall and 1-6 in SoCon games.
"I thought we had a good team effort against a good Wofford team that plays well at home today," Samford head coach
Mike Morris said. "I'm definitely pleased with our effort and the way we controlled the game from a defensive standpoint. This was a good road win and a good road weekend."
Brittany Stevens and
Amara Mayers scored 10 points each to lead Samford in the win. Stevens also had six rebounds and three assists, and Mayers added five rebounds and two assists.
Kassidy Blevins scored nine points,
Ellen Riggins had eight points and seven rebounds, and
Krista Stricklin added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
For Wofford, Kentra Washington led all scorers with 19 points. Washington also grabbed a team-high six rebounds for the Terriers.
After falling behind early, 5-2. Samford scored six-straight points to take an 8-5 lead with 6:13 to go in the period after a basket by Stevens. Wofford fought back to take an 11-10 lead late in the quarter. Samford's Stricklin, however, hit a layup at the first-quarter buzzer to give Samford a 12-11 lead.
Wofford took a 13-12 lead early in the second quarter. Samford, however scored the next eight points to take a 20-13 lead with 4:59 to go in the period after a three-pointer by Blevins. After Wofford cut the lead to 20-15, Samford scored the final six points of the quarter to take a 26-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Samford pushed its lead to 14 points early in the third quarter at 31-17 with 6:14 left in the period following a layup by
Destiney Elliott. Wofford cut the lead to 11 points on three occasions in the quarter, but Samford ended the period with a 42-27 lead.
The Bulldogs increased their lead to 20 points at 47-27 with 9:10 to go in the game after a three-point play by Blevins. Wofford fought back to cut the lead to 16 points at 49-33 with 4:49 left in the game. The Terriers, however, could get no closer as Samford came away with the 19-point win at 58-39.
As a team, Samford shot 32.1 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs won the rebounding battle, 46-33. Samford forced Wofford into 17 turnovers, while committing 13 turnovers of its own.
Samford will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 4, when the Bulldogs host UNCG. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. (CT) tip from the Pete Hanna Center.
