BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University soccer team used a pair of goals from senior forward
Jermaine Seoposenwe on Sunday to earn a decisive 3-0 victory against The Citadel Bulldogs and to also extend its home winning streak to five-consecutive matches held at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium.
Â
"I thought we knocked it really well today," said Samford head coach
Todd Yelton. "I didn't think we were very sharp in front of goal, but I want to give full credit to The Citadel. Their players battled the whole time. We probably could have scored a few more, but at the end of the day, we just weren't very clinical in front of goal. It was a hard-fought win against a team that always give us a hard time."
Â
With the victory,
Samford (7-3-2, 3-1 SoCon) improved to 6-1 at home this season and 9-1-1 all-time against
The Citadel (3-8, 0-4 SoCon). Additionally, the Bulldogs tallied their fourth-consecutive win over the Cadets, dating back to 2013. Since being shocked by The Citadel, 3-2, on Oct. 18, 2013, Samford has outscored the Cadets, 17-1, in the series.
Â
"Nobody will ever question the mentality of this Citadel team," Yelton said. "They always fight so hard and the depth of our squad is our strength, but right now we just need to be much better in front of goal, especially in our final game of the weekend, because I felt that this was the second week in a row that we could have done much better."
Â
The Citadel suffered its eighth straight loss of the season and was outshot by the Bulldogs, 25-2. In two matches this weekend, Samford outscored the opposition 5-0 and outshot their opponents by a total of 43-6. On Friday, the Bulldogs opened their two-match homestand with a pivotal 2-0 victory against Mercer.
Â
"We play excellent on Fridays, but we have some more work to do on our Sunday performances," Yelton said. "At the end of the season, they crown the SoCon Tournament champion on a Sunday afternoon, so if you want a chance to get that, you first have to get there. Then, secondly, you have to be good on that day."
Â
Since the opening kick Sunday, The Citadel dropped back a majority of its players into the defensive half of the field and it took Samford nearly 30 minutes to break through for its opening goal.
Â
Seoposenwe, who competed for her home country of South Africa in the 2016 Olympic Games this summer, scored her first goal of the match at exactly 29:16 into the first half. On the game-winning goal, junior forward
Abriella Argueta sent a perfectly-placed crossing pass deep into the box that Seoposenwe headed home from five yards out.
Â
The goal proved to be Seoposenwe's eighth of the season and gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Nearly 15 minutes into the second half, Samford's Seoposenwe struck again for her second goal of the afternoon. The scoring opportunity was initiated by sophomore forward
Ella Baggett, who rifled a shot attempt from the left corner of the box. Baggett's attempt was saved and deflected by The Citadel's goalkeeper Logan Leask, but the ball bounded directly out to Seoposenwe 15 yards away in the middle of the field.
Â
Seoposenwe, who was in the perfect place at the perfect time, then fired a right-footed shot into the right corner of the goal for the score, her team-leading ninth of the season.
Â
Baggett was credited with an assist on the play, which proved to be her third helper of the 2016 campaign.
Â
With her two-goal performance, Seoposenwe moved into a tie for ninth place all-time on Samford's goals-scored list. She currently has 19 goals scored in her career and is tied with former Bulldog-great Hayley Kolb, who played at Samford from 2000-03.
Â
Just over five minutes later, the Bulldogs'
Taylor Borman was credited with a penalty kick after The Citadel committed an egregious handball in the box. Borman, the Bulldogs' senior forward from Georgetown, Kentucky, then easily found the back of the net on the attempt, right of the goalkeeper, for her fifth goal of the season.
Â
Borman's second-half score also gave Samford its decisive 3-0 decision Sunday.
Â
The Citadel's Leask proved to be a rock star in goal against Samford. The Cadets' freshman goalkeeper from Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, faced 25 shot attempts and made 10 saves. She single-handedly kept The Citadel within striking distance Sunday by making a trio of game-changing stops against Samford's strikers.
Â
The Bulldogs topped The Citadel in nearly every statistical category, including corner kicks, 11-0, and shots on goal, 14-0.
Â
Samford goalkeeper
Anna Maddox started in goal and improved her record on the season to 6-0. Fellow junior stopper
Katie Peters also earned playing time Sunday as she came in for the final 13:17 of the match. Neither goalkeeper was forced to make a save.
Â
"It was really good to have a lot of our younger players earn some playing time today," said Yelton. "They all train so hard and work so hard, so anytime we have a chance to get them on the park and get them some minutes, we definitely want to do it. We definitely don't give minutes away around here and everybody on the team knows that you have to earn them."
Â
The Samford University soccer team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a Southern Rail Rivalry contest against the Chattanooga Mocs to be held at Finley Stadium.
