KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island's Charise Wilson scored 38 points to lead the Rams' women's basketball team to a 78-63 win over Samford Sunday afternoon at the Ryan Center.
With the loss, Samford falls to 1-3 on the young season. Rhode Island improved to 2-3 with the win.
"I thought, from an offensive standpoint, we were good, for the most part, in the game, but we got stagnant in the fourth quarter when they made their run," Samford head coach
Mike Morris said. "Defensively, we were not very good at all. Defensively, it was probably one of the worst efforts we've had."
Samford led, 25-22 after the first quarter and 38-36 at halftime. After three quarters, Rhode Island held a 54-53 advantage. Rhode Island, however, outscored Samford, 24-10 in the final period to pull away for the 78-63 win.
Samford was led in the game by
Kassidy Blevins with 18 points.
Samantha Fitzgerald followed with 15 points and four rebounds.
Hannah Nichols added 10 points and a team-high five rebounds.
For Rhode Island, Wilson made 15-of-25 shots from the floor and 3-of-9 from three-point range for her 38 points. Dina Motrechuk scored eight points, while Nicole Jorgensen added six points and 12 rebounds.
As a team, Samford made 41.4 percent of its shots, but just 28.6 percent in the fourth quarter. Rhode Island shot 55.6 percent for the game, including a 72.7-percent effort in the fourth period.
