MOBILE, Ala. – It took undefeated Mississippi State University extra innings to defeat the Samford University softball team 5-3 on the final day of the Mardi Gras Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 21.
The Bulldogs (4-5) took the Southeastern Conference foe to the limit and came up just short in the effort against the Bulldogs (9-0) from Starkville, Mississippi.
In a game that saw great pitching from both redshirt senior
Mollie Hanson (2-3) and Holley Ward (5-0) both teams battled to score precious runs.
Samford struck first in the contest on an RBI triple in the top of the 2
nd inning from senior
Callie Brister. The Tuscaloosa, Alabama native scored senior
Caitlin Bice after she reached on a throwing error by the Mississippi State catcher.
Mississippi State bounced back in the bottom of the 3
rd inning after Winkfield reached on a two-out walk by Hanson. Kayla Winkfield scored the tying run in the following at-bat on an RBI single to shallow right field by Caroline Seitz.
MSU broke the tie in the bottom of the 5
th inning after Winkfield reached on a lead-off double to left field. Again, it was Seitz who produced for the Bulldogs from Starkville as she drove in Winkfield on a sacrifice fly out to deep center field.
Samford didn't go away as the team rallied in top of the 7
th inning. Sophomore
Shelby Maze opened up the inning with a lead-off single to third and advanced to second on a passed ball and eventually third on a wild pitch from Ward.
With two outs on the board junior
Abby Sweeney came into the game to pinch hit for freshman
Kelsey Royalty. Sweeney battled her way through the at-bat and eventually broke through as she ripped an RBI triple down into left field. Loryn Nichols dove for the ball and missed which allowed it to roll to the wall and Sweeney to move all the way to third.
With the heart of the Mississippi State line-up due up in the bottom of the 8
th inning, Seitz led off with a single down the left line to set the stage for the next two batters. Mackenzie Toler drew a walk from Hanson which allowed Morgan Bell to produce the game-winning three-run home run.
The Bulldogs will open up their 2016 home schedule with the Samford Invitational that is scheduled to begin on Friday, Feb. 26, at 5 p.m. when Samford plays host to Tennessee Tech.
