BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman catcher
Hannah Trombley helped the Samford University softball team blow past Tennessee Tech 10-2 in six innings on Friday, Feb. 26, at the Samford Softball Field. Trombley finished the game going 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles, a home run and five RBIs.
"Kudos to Trombley tonight. I'm pretty sure she is leading the team in home runs now, she hasn't hit a single yet – everything she hits goes for extra bases." Head Coach
Mandy Burford said. "She's hitting the ball really well right now and it's carried over from a successful travel ball season this summer where she hit the ball just like that."
It was senior third baseman
Callie Brister who put the Bulldogs (5-5) on the board 1-0 in the bottom of the 2
nd inning as she sent a 2-0 pitch from Danielle Liberatore (1-4) over the wall in left field.
Trombley quickly followed up and gave Samford separation with her two-run homer to straight away center that scored
Abbie Miranda.
The productive 2
nd inning was capped off by sophomore
Shelby Maze's shot to first that was not fielded cleanly by the Tennessee Tech (3-7) first baseman which scored
Lexie Higgins for an unearned run to make the score 4-0 in favor of Samford.
Samford struck for three more runs in the bottom of the following inning thanks in part to a RBI bloop single to right field from junior
Abby Sweeney that scored
Callie Brister.
Yet again it was Trombley who recorded her fifth-consecutive extra base hit to give Samford a 7-0 lead over the Golden Eagles with a double to right center field to score Miranda and
Caroline Wilder.
From there redshirt-senior
Mollie Hanson (3-3) proceeded to retire 10-consecutive Golden Eagle batters before giving up her first hit of the contest to Alyssa Richards. Richards recorded a double off of Hanson in the top of the 4
th but no damage was done.
Tennessee Tech finally broke onto the scoreboard in the top of the 5
th inning when Madison Taylor drove in a pair of runs with her home run over the wall in right center field.
Samford put the game away in the bottom of the 6
th inning on a trio of hits. Wilder doubled to left center field to score Brister then Sweeney drove in Wilder on a RBI single through the left side.
It was only fitting that Trombley drive in the final run of the game on what would be her sixth-consecutive extra base hit with a game winning double to right center field that scored pinch runner
Kelsey Royalty all the way from first.
Wilder finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI and two runs scored while Brister went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
The Bulldogs return to action to 12:30 p.m. tomorrow when they take on Wright State.
