Updated StatsMONROE, La. -- The Samford University baseball team scored four runs on three hits in the top of the eighth inning Sunday, but the Bulldogs' late rally came up just short in a 6-4 road decision against the ULM Warhawks in the rubber game of a three-day series held at Warhawk Field.
Samford (7-5) moved to 1-2 in road contests this season, while
ULM (6-5) improved to 2-1 when playing at home at Warhawk Field.
The Bulldogs will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CST) as they return home to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a midweek matchup against in-state foe Troy.
Heading into the top of the eighth inning Sunday, Samford trailed ULM, 6-0. Through the first seven frames of the game, the Bulldogs were limited to two base hits.
Samford's
Richard Greene was hit by a pitch to start off the eighth inning. He then advanced to second base on a balk by the Warhawks' relief pitcher Keegan Curtis. Two batters later, the Bulldogs'
T.J. Dixon rifled a double down the right-field line and scored Greene for his eighth RBI of the season.
With Dixon on second base, Curtis hit
Hunter Swilling with a pitch to put runners on first and second with just one out.
Next up, Samford's
Heath Quinn, a junior Preseason All-American from Birmingham, Ala., smacked a double to left-center field to score
T.J. Dixon from second base to make the score 2-0. Following an
Austin Edens popup to shortstop, the Bulldogs'
Alex Lee rope a single to center field to drive in two more runs and cut ULM's lead to 6-4.
Lee, Samford's First-Team All-Southern Conference Preseason selection, has reached base safely in all 12 of the Bulldogs' games this year and upped his RBI total on the season to seven.
At that point, the Warhawks' Anthony Herrera came on to pitch and forced
Jared Watson into a groundout to shortstop to end the inning.
ULM jumped out to an early 3-0 lead Sunday with a rally in the first inning. The Warhawks then tacked on a run in the fourth, as well as two more in the sixth to make the score 6-0 heading into the eighth frame. ULM scored six runs on seven hits and took advantage of two Samford errors.
The Bulldogs scored four runs on five hits and were paced by
T.J. Dixon's 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Quinn, Lee and Watson also added hits for Samford as well.
