Samford Takes Series Over Jacksonville State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball team wrapped up a three-game series against Jacksonville State University by taking the final game 7-4 at home on Sunday, March 6, after the two teams split a doubleheader the day prior.

"JSU is a great ball team. They play defense well, they pitch really well – every pitcher on their staff has great stats and they each throw something different – I think that's something that's versatile about them and that I would like our program to get to." Head Coach Mandy Burford continued. "Every pitcher they bring in does something different to where we have to adjust at the plate and they hit so well too. Emily Church was so good yesterday that we focused on limiting her more today but she still got two RBIs on a changeup."

The Bulldogs (11-7) took the series behind the outstanding performances of Callie Brister and Mollie Hanson (6-3). Brister went 3 for 4 at the plate and was a triple shy from hitting for the cycle while being responsible for three RBIs and a pair of runs scored.

"I'm proud of how well she is doing with this being her senior year. Every time I look at her in the box she has this determined look in her eyes so I just couldn't be more proud of her." Burford said.

Hanson picked up her 56th career victory to cap off a stellar 3-0 week from the circle. The Dothan, Alabama native pitched a complete-game while giving up four runs, three earned, along with a pair of strikeouts and walks.

"They saw Mollie four at-bats today and three or four yesterday, so seven total for a great hitting team and she was able to limit them to four runs this afternoon." Burford ended. "So I'm really proud of the way she worked."

Senior Megan Dowdy equaled Brister with a 3 for 4 performance at the plate herself that also included three RBIs and on run scored in the effort.

The Fairhope, Alabama native opened up the scoring with a two-out single through the left side that scored Brister and Shelby Maze.

Jacksonville State bounced back for a single run in the top of the 2nd inning after McGuire scored on a throwing error by shortstop Lexie Higgins. Offensively, Higgins helped Samford bounce back and pick up a run in the bottom of the frame after she walked to leadoff and was brought home on a double down the left line from Brister to make the score 3-1.

Brister extended Samford's lead out to 5-1 in the bottom of the 4th when she crushed her fourth home run of the season.

The Bulldogs capped off their scoring efforts in the 5th inning thanks to Dowdy's second double of the season that scored Bice and an RBI single from Higgins that scored Dowdy.

Samford returns to action on Tuesday, March 8, when the team travels to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on No. 4 University of Alabama. The game will be televised on the SEC Network with a first pitch slated for 7:30 p.m. CST.
