Updated StatsBIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford's senior pitcher
Parker Curry struck out a season-high 11 batters and only allowed a pair of singles Sunday in the Bulldogs' 6-0 Southern Conference home victory against the Wofford Terriers in a rubber-game contest held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
"Parker threw the ball really well today," said Samford head coach
Casey Dunn. "He had two walks in the first inning and both of those were difficult walks because they were long at-bats and Wofford definitely earned those walks. Throughout the game, I was happy with the way that he threw and this was another big win for us today."
With the win,
Samford (18-14, 5-4 SoCon) claimed its second straight conference series victory and improved to 13-7 when playing at home the season. The Bulldogs have posted back-to-back series triumphs against league rivals Mercer and
Wofford (17-17, 2-7 SoCon).
Samford's Curry (3-1) proved to be the star of Sunday's matchup. The Bulldogs' native of Pelham and standout at Pelham High School tallied 11 strikeouts and only allowed two hits in the shutout victory. The shutout proved to be Samford's first of the 2016 campaign.
Since Curry's start in a crucial 5-3 victory at Furman on March 25, the Bulldogs' young, talented pitching staff boasts a 3.22 earned-run average. Curry is the only senior pitcher on Samford's roster this season.
Offensively, Samford's
Heath Quinn drove in a run in both the first and third innings and the Bulldogs later exploded for four key insurance tallies in the bottom of the eighth.
Quinn finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, while
T.J. Dixon notched a 2-for-4 performance and added an RBI of his own. The Bulldogs'
Hunter Swilling,
Austin Edens,
Alex Lee,
Jared Watson,
Danny Rodriguez and
Frankie Navarrete all posted base hits against Wofford on Sunday.
"I thought that Heath really had two big hits for us early to give us the lead and then Parker was able to get dialed in and threw the ball extremely well," Dunn said. "This win was encouraging for us to battle back and take the series. We pitched well all weekend long and we swung the bats better and we played great in the field, so I'm really encouraged by the progress we're making in both of those areas."
In Samford's four-run outburst in the eighth inning, the Bulldogs' Quinn, Edens, Lee and Watson all reached base to open the frame. A Wofford error and a passed ball both aided in the big inning, but Dixon also drove in a key run with an infield single.
Dixon, who is the active career leader in stolen bases in the SoCon, displayed why he is one of the fastest players in the league as he beat out the throw to first base on the play.
"Offensively, I was extremely pleased with our guys in how they were able to get the ball in play," Dunn said. "We only had four strikeouts today and one of those came in a tough spot late in the game, so I'm really pleased with our offense. It was just a tough day to hit and unlike Friday and Saturday, Wofford made every play in the field. They only had one error in today's game and they played much better, defensively."
Following Parker's seven innings of shutout baseball, Samford brought in reliever
Wyatt Burns, who entered the weekend ranked second in the nation with 19 appearances. Burns has only allowed a total of three earned runs this season in 21.1 innings and showcases a 1.27 ERA.
On Sunday, Burns only allowed two hits in the final two stanzas and tallied his third save of the season.
The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CDT) as the Bulldogs welcome the Alabama State Hornets to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a key in-state contest.
Earlier this season, Samford and Alabama State squared off in Montgomery on March 15, and the Bulldogs rallied late for an 18-7 victory.
