BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University softball wrapped up non-conference play with their third doubleheader sweep in the past week with 11-0 & 13-2 wins, both in five innings, over Alabama A&M University on Tuesday, April 26, at the Samford Softball Stadium.
"Top to bottom I thought the team performed well today." Head Coach
Mandy Burford said. "The bench was incredible, Meg and Maze were a fantastic one-two punch at the top of the order and I thought all of the pitchers did well today."
Senior outfielder
Megan Dowdy set the tone for the Bulldogs offense in the first at-bat in the bottom of the first of game one. The Fairhope, Alabama native crushed her second home run of the season to give Samford a 1-0 lead over Alabama A&M.
From there the Bulldogs rallied out to a 6-0 lead to end the inning, the rally was highlighted by senior
Caitlin Bice's grand slam home run. It was the Chelsea, Alabama native's fifth home run of the season. Bice ended the day 3 for 4 (.750) with seven RBIs and two runs scored.
Dowdy continued her hot hitting in game two against the Lady Bulldogs as she went 3 for 3 at the plate with a walk a double and triple. The double by Dowdy gave her the Samford career record for doubles with 44 while the triple tied her for the career lead in that category with a total of 10.
Janet Middleton previously held the career doubles record with 43 while playing for the Bulldogs from 1999-2002 and Pam Abernathy holds the career record for triples with 10 which she accumulated from 1989-1992.
The Bulldogs picked up where they left off in game one as the team racked up 12 hits and three walks en-route to the 13-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.
Four Samford pitchers saw action today and combined to limit Alabama A&M to just five hits through 10 innings and two runs scored.
Grey Adams and
Jessica Stone combined for the two-hit 11-0 shutout in game one while
Rebecca Leonard and
Annalyn Yantis limited the Lady Bulldogs to just three hits and two runs.
Samford returns back to Southern Conference action for the first time in nearly two weeks when the team travels to take on ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 and the series finale on Sunday, May 1.
