BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Samford baseball team walked nine batters, hit four batters, and committed four errors in an 8-4 loss to East Tennessee State in the final game of a Southern Conference series Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
"We gave 13 free passes between walks and hit-by-pitches, and we played poor defensively," Samford head coach
Casey Dunn said. "Not just the errors that showed up, but there were a couple of ground balls that we sat back on and didn't come and get that turned into hits. It was just a poorly executed game all the way around."
ETSU earns the series sweep with the win. Samford drops to 26-22 overall and 8-10 in Southern Conference play. ETSU improves to 22-25 overall and 9-9 in league games.
Samford's
Stephen Jones (3-2) took the loss on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Jones was one of seven pitchers used by Samford in the game.

Caleb Maggio also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.
For Samford at the plate,
Austin Edens went 2-for-4 with his 15
th home run of the season and two RBI.
Heath Quinn went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while
Danny Rodriguez went 2-for-4.
For ETSU, Jamin McCann (6-3) tossed 5.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits to earn the win. Trey York went 3-for-6 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Bucs at the plate.
The game was a pitchers' duel through the first four innings. Samford plated the lone run during that stretch in the bottom of the third inning.
Frankie Navarrete walked to lead off the inning, and later scored on a double by
Hunter Swilling for a 1-0 Samford lead.
ETSU took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. York drove in the first run of the inning with a single, and later scored on a wild pitch for a 2-1 ETSU lead.
The Bucs pulled away with two runs in the seventh inning and three more in the eighth. In the seventh, Jeremy Taylor scored on a wild pitch for the first run, and Blake Rowlett drove in the second run with a single, scoring Hagen Owenby. In the eighth inning, York hit a two-run homer, and Taylor drove in a run for a 7-1 ETSU lead.
Samford scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-2 on a lead-off home run by Edens. ETSU answered with a run in the top of the ninth inning to push its lead to 8-2.
The Bulldogs plated two final runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Quinn and Edens drove in a run each in the inning to make the final score 8-4.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, May 10, when the Bulldogs play at cross-town rival UAB. The first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. at UAB's Young Memorial Field.
