Fitzgerald's Double-Double Leads WBB In 72-50 Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team earned a 72-50 non-conference win over Auburn-Montgomery Tuesday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
"I thought from an offensive standpoint, we really did some nice things," Samford head coach Mike Morris said. "We shared the ball, had a lot of assists, only had eight turnovers. We did some really nice things against their zone. Defensively, we had moments when we were not very good, but at times, we were okay. AUM did a good job of spreading us out and making some shots."
 
Samford freshman Samantha Fitzgerald posted a double-double with a career-high 16 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Hannah Nichols also had 16 points for the Bulldogs, while Katie Allen contributed 13 points. Cassidy Williams added a career-high 12 points for the Bulldogs. Lydia McGee dished out a career-high seven assists in the victory.
 
AUM was led in scoring by Nadia Stewart with nine points and six rebounds. Tyra Caudle, Shanna Strain, Ashton Sutton and Chandler Sutton added six points each for the Warhawks.
 
After AUM jumped out to an early 5-2 lead, Samford went on a 15-4 run to take a 17-9 lead with 59 seconds to go in the first quarter following a three-point play by Fitzgerald. Samford held a 19-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
 
Samford pushed its lead out to 11 points early in the second quarter at 26-15 with 7:25 to go in the period after a layup by Fitzgerald. After AUM cut the lead to eight points at 30-22, Samford went on an 11-0 run to push its lead out to 19 points at 41-22 with 2:20 to go in the second quarter. Samford took a 44-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Samford pushed its lead out to as many as 23 points at 54-31 with 2:45 left in the quarter following a free throw by Fitzgerald. Samford held a 58-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.
 
In the fourth quarter, AUM fought back to cut the lead to 14 points at 60-46 with 5:53 to go in the game after a three-pointer by Ashton Sutton. Samford answered with a 12-0 run to push the lead out to 26 points at 72-46 with 1:58 to go after a three-pointer by Allen. Samford came away with the 72-50 victory over the Warhawks.
 
As a team, Samford shot 45.9 percent from the floor, including a 41.7-percent effort from three-point range. AUM made 37.0 percent of its shots overall and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. Samford won the rebounding battle, 43-27.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 9-12 so far this season. The game was an exhibition for AUM, which has a record of 5-15 this season.
 
Samford will return to action on Saturday, when the Bulldogs play at Southern Conference rival Mercer. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Macon, Ga.
