FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- On Friday, in its 2017-18 season opener, the Samford University basketball team shot a frigid 32.8 percent from the field and 8-of-29 from beyond the arc, while committing 19 turnovers in a 95-56 setback on the road against the Arkansas Razorbacks in front of an estimated actual attendance of 8,054 at Bud Walton Arena.

Samford (0-1) started off cold in the opening minutes of the contest and trailed at the half, 47-19. The Bulldogs turned in a 26.9-percent performance in the opening stanza, which included a 2-of-12 mark from long range.

Conversely,
Arkansas (1-0) shot a sizzling 53.8 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the field in the first half.

The second half proved to be much more of the same. Samford drained four 3-pointers in the period, but the Razorbacks remained strong on the offensive end with 48 more points in the half.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by senior Alex Thompson with 10 points on 4-of-11 shooting from the field. Demetrius Denzel-Dyson added eight points, while Christen Cunningham chipped in with seven.

Arkansas finished with six players scoring in double figures and were paced by Jaylen Barford and Daryl Macon with 16 points apiece.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Monday at 7 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs return to Birmingham, Alabama, for their 2017-18 home-opening contest against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs to be held at the Pete Hanna Center.
