BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford's Justin Coleman registered his first career double-double as a Bulldog Sunday as the lightning-quick guard scored a team-high 21 points and handed out 10 assists en route to an 83-70 home victory against the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils in a non-conference contest held at the Pete Hanna Center.

Coleman drained a game-high four 3-point baskets in the victory as
Samford (2-5) connected on a season-high 16 as a team. The Bulldogs knocked down an impressive 55.2 percent of their attempts from long range Sunday and finished with a 51.9-percent tally from the field.

Early in the first half, Samford used a 20-2 run to take control of the momentum in the contest.

During the Bulldogs' streak, Coleman scored four straight points, Alex Thompson drained a 3-pointer and then Coleman added five more. Samford's Stefan Lakic and Triston Chambers also drained shots from long range to cap off the Bulldogs' rally.

Behind nine first-half 3-pointers, Samford took a 43-29 lead into the locker room. Coleman scored 12 of his 21 points in the opening 20 minutes of action.

Thompson finished Sunday's 13-point victory over
Mississippi Valley State (0-7) with 18 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two blocked shots. He also knocked down a trio of 3-point baskets in the contest.

The Bulldogs' Demetrius Denzel-Dyson tallied 14 points and five rebounds, while Chambers, Christen Cunningham and Lakic finished with nine, eight and seven points, respectively. Cunningham also added six assists in the matchup.

Samford outrebounded the Delta Devils, 36-31, and outscored Mississippi Valley State, 23-10, in fast-break points.

Dante Scott led the Delta Devils in scoring with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, while Nate Nahimy followed with 13. Emmanuel Ejeh paced all competitors with 12 rebounds, five of which occurred on the offensive end of the court.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs make the short trip east to Jacksonville State University for a highly-anticipated in-state showdown against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks to be held at Pete Mathews Coliseum.
