Women's Basketball Falls At #13 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Samford women's basketball team fell at 13th-ranked Florida State, 87-62, Sunday afternoon at the Tucker Center.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 2-4 on the young season. Florida State improves to 6-0 so far this season.
 
Samford was led in the game by senior guard Hannah Nichols with 20 points. Samantha Fitzgerald followed with 14 points, while Cassidy Williams added 11 points. Charity Brown had eight points, five rebounds and seven assists in the loss.
 
Florida State was led by Shakayla Thomas with 29 points. Imani Wright and Nausia Woolfolk scored 14 points each, while Ama Degbeon added 11 points and 11 rebounds.
 
After Florida State jumped out to a 7-0 lead, Samford fought back to cut the lead to 7-5 with 5:17 to go in the first quarter on a jumper by Makaila Woolard. Florida State answered with an 11-0 run to push its lead to 18-5 with 30 seconds left in the opening period. A late three-pointer by Williams cut the FSU lead to 18-8 at the close the first quarter.
 
Florida State pushed its lead to as many as 19 points in the second quarter at 33-14 and 35-16. Samford, however, closed the quarter on a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 37-29 heading into the locker room at halftime. Three-pointers by Nichols, Brown and Fitzgerald led Samford on the run to close to within eight points at halftime.
 
FSU opened the third period with a 12-3 run to push its lead back out to 17 points at 49-32 with 5:03 left in the quarter. The Seminoles went on to lead by as many as 18 points in the quarter and held a 57-43 advantage at the end of the third period.
 
The Seminoles went on a 17-3 run to start the fourth quarter to take a 74-46 lead with 6:20 left in the game after a three-point play by Thomas. FSU pushed its lead out to as many as 31 points at 83-52, and the Seminoles came away with an 87-62 victory.
 
Samford will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 30, when the Bulldogs host UCF at 6 p.m. in the Pete Hanna Center. Admission to the game is FREE.
