Volleyball Earns Gutsy Five-Set Victory Over Chattanooga On Senior Night

The Bulldogs’ Neisler and St. Germain were both honored prior to Saturday’s match

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to defeat the Chattanooga Mocs, 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 25-15, 16-25, 15-11), on Saturday as the Bulldogs' Shayla Phillip, Kelsi Hobbs, Grace Tiesman and Krista Boesing all finished with double-digit kills en route to a key Southern Conference victory held at the Pete Hanna Center on Senior Night.
 
Prior to Saturday's showdown, Samford (12-16, 7-7 SoCon) acknowledged its special 2017 senior class with a pre-match presentation for Kate Neisler and Morgan St. Germain.
 
St. Germain started for the Bulldogs against Chattanooga (13-15, 6-8 SoCon) on Saturday and turned in a solid contest. Samford's senior defensive specialist from League City, Texas, tallied seven digs and two assists in the victory.
 
With Saturday's win over the Mocs, the Bulldogs concluded their weekend homestand with a 1-1 record. Samford will next be in action Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CT) against Mercer in a midweek contest to be held in Macon, Georgia.
 
The Bulldogs finished their thrilling back-and-forth, five-set matchup against Chattanooga with four players with double-digit kills. Phillip turned in a spectacular performance with a match-high 18 kills and only one attacking error. Samford's talented native of Columbia, South Carolina, closed out the contest with a jaw-dropping .708 hitting percentage.
 
Boesing posted 16 kills in the victory, while Hobbs added 13 and Tiesman posted 12. Tiesman also registered 18 digs, as true freshman Kendal Strand led the team with a match-high 20 digs.
 
Samford's Taylor Anderton, the Bulldogs' junior setter and reigning SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, posted a game-best 56 assists. She also notched eight digs, a blocking assist and two service aces.
 
The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Wednesday at 5 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel west to Macon, Georgia, for a critical late-season contest to be held in Hawkins Arena.
