Bulldogs Bound For NCAA Regional Meet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - - The Samford men's and women's cross country teams will be back in action Friday morning at the Harry Pritchett Running Park for the 2017 NCAA South Regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

The Bulldogs are coming off of a second place performance on the women's side and a third place finish from the men's team just two weekends ago at the Southern Conference Championships.

Karisa Nelson will lead the ladies into Tuscaloosa as she is the top returner from last year's South Regional meet in the women's field. Nelson along with senior Anna Long earned First Team All-Conference honors at the SoCon title meet and will look to help the seventh ranked Bulldogs earn a trip to the national meet.

Cross Country Coach Pat McGregor said he has high expectations for the women's team.

"I have our girls on paper as being capable of being in the top two and making the national meet but we will see," McGregor said. "Expect the unexpected on both sides."

On the men's side, First Team All-Conference member Arséne Guillorel and Second Team All-Conference member Ben Bryant will look to lead the 13^th ranked Samford guys into the South Regional meet. Guillorel will also be looking to secure a trip to his third national meet which would be "a huge accomplishment" as McGregor also stated.

There will be a total of 41 teams competing on the men's side while 34 teams will have competitors in the women's field.

Along with the top two teams from the nine different regions, the top four runners not on an advancing team will receive an automatic bid into the national meet. Additional teams and individuals are chosen through an at-large selection process for the 2017 NCAA Championship. The National Championship meet will be held Saturday, Nov. 18, in Louisville, Ky.

The Women's 6K race will start at 9 a.m. (CT) with the Men's 10K set to follow at 10 a.m.
